Cheap Holidays from Scotland: Visit Tunisia
Cheap Holidays from Scotland – Why Visit Tunisia?
If you’re craving sun, rest, and luxury without the price tag, Tunisia is one of the best family holidays from Scotland right now. Think winter vitamin D, peaceful beaches, 5-star hotels, and direct flights from Glasgow and Edinburgh
We’ve been to Tunisia twice this year, both times as a family of five, and honestly, it was one of the most stress-free trips we’ve ever had. The flight time is short (just 3 hours 35 mins), the airport is calm, and the journey from check-in to hotel pool feels smooth and manageable, even with small children.
If you want to explore more smart escapes, check out these deals and my blog on the best destinations from Scottish airports
A Family Holiday to Tunisia: What to Expect…
- A calm, hotel-based reset where you don’t need to plan much
- Beautiful beaches and spa treatments at affordable prices
- Cultural day trips like camel rides, El Jem amphitheatre (where Gladiator was filmed), or visiting Tunis and Carthage or visit the Monty Python & Star Wars sets.
- Winter sun without long-haul stress
This isn’t a wander-round-town trip like you might have in Spain or Portugal. Tunisia is more of a stay-put-in-a-fancy-hotel holiday, with the option of a few meaningful day trips if you fancy it. It’s perfect for those cocooning when the main goal is rest – especially for mums.
Other Tunisia highlights? You can see wild flamingos, ride camels, shop colourful souks, taste incredible local food. Try the shakshuka and the freshly fried breakfast doughnuts, and keep an eye out for sweet, sticky dates. Alcohol is served in most hotels, and the wine and beer are actually very decent.
Sometimes all you need is some sunshine, simple food you didn’t have to cook, and a peaceful place where the kids are entertained and you can actually lie down for more than ten minutes. This is that place.
Where to Stay in Tunisia: Best Hotels for Families
These are the hotels that have stood out:
- Iberostar Selection Kantaoui Bay – We stayed here last January and it was fabulous!
- Nozha Beach Resort & Spa – Beachfront with great pools & incredible reviews
- The Sindbad Hotel – More boutique and peaceful, with lush gardens and spa options
There are also great lesser-known hotels that don’t carry the international brand name but still deliver a 4-star experience at a fraction of the price.
Is Tunisia a Good Value Destination?
Tunisia is one of the few destinations where your pound still goes far. Here are real package deals I’ve seen this week:
- 10 nights all-inclusive in a 5-star hotel, family of 4 – £1,300 total
- 7 nights half board, 4-star resort, family of 4 in January – £1,042 total (£261 per person)
- 7 nights bed and breakfast, 4-star hotel, family of 4 – £776 total
That’s for your accommodation, meals, and flights from Glasgow or Edinburgh including luggage.

Is Tunisia Good for Families?
Yes!
- Direct flights from Scotland – Calm times, easy check-in, and under 4 hours
- No party scene – Relaxed resorts instead of crowded bar strips (although you can find party hotels)
- Safe and family-focused – Locals are warm and welcoming to children
- Spa treatments, pools, sea views – at prices you can’t find in the Eurozone
- Quick transfers – Most resorts are under an hour from the airport
- Impeccable beaches – think white powdery sand and clear turquoise water
It’s the kind of place where you actually come home rested. Not exhausted from chasing toddlers around busy plazas or trying to keep up with everything.
Day Trips in Tunisia
If you do want to explore, there’s plenty to see:
- El Jem – A Roman amphitheatre more impressive than the Colosseum in Rome, but without the crowds
- Camel rides – A fun, family-safe option near the resort areas
- Tunis and Sidi Bou Said – Markets, blue-and-white houses (that was the inspiration for Santorini), and coastal charm
- Carthage ruins – Layers of ancient history just outside the capital
- Beach towns like Monastir, Sousse, Hammamet – packed with history and character
You can usually book these through your hotel or a local tour company for much less than you’d pay in other countries.
Tunisia Travel Tips
If this is your first time visiting Tunisia, here are a few tips to make your trip smooth and stress-free.
- First, Tunisia has a closed currency (the Tunisian dinar) euros and sterling are widely accepted, especially in resorts, hotels and tourist towns. It is illegal to take it in or out of the country so make sure you change it or spend it before you leave.
- Once you arrive, we recommend exchanging some small denominations (like 10 or 20 dinar notes), as tipping is appreciated and goes a long way.
- No visa is needed for UK travellers.
- Tunisia is just a 3.5-hour direct flight from Scotland, making it one of the easiest North African destinations for families.
- There is no online check-in, so you’ll need to go old-school and get your boarding pass printed at the airport desk.
- Try to avoid May/early June, as it’s peak mosquito season. The best times to go are July to April, where you’ll enjoy sunshine without the bugs.
- You will need an e-sim as most UK networks will not work there. This is the one I use – Airalo
