Three of our favourite cheap winter destinations
Winter is an excellent time to escape and explore new horizons on a budget. Cheap winter destinations are plentyful. If you’re looking to embark on an exciting winter adventure without breaking the bank, we’ve got you covered. Lot’s of you message us asking ‘where are the best cheap winter destinations?!’, and it varies over time depending on budget, flight availability and hotel pricing.
In this blog post, we’ll discuss three of our favourite affordable winter destinations that promise an unforgettable experience. We’ll be taking you to enchanting Estonia, the sunny paradise of Gran Canaria, and the charming town of Albufeira in the Algarve.
Tallinn, Estonia
Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, is a hidden gem for winter travellers seeking old-world charm and fairytale vibes. Known for its beautifully preserved medieval old town, Tallinn offers a unique blend of history and modernity that’s especially beautiful in the winter months.
Winter Highlights:
- Medieval Old Town: Explore the cobblestone streets lined with beautifully preserved medieval buildings. The town transforms into a fairytale wonderland with the addition of snow and festive decorations. Everything is really compact so from your accommodation in the old town, you can pretty much walk to all of the main tourist sites.
- Christmas Markets: Tallinn’s Christmas markets are magical. You can enjoy traditional Estonian food, buy handmade gifts, and enjoy the festive atmosphere without burning a hole in your pocket. The markets this year run from 1st December 2023 to the 7th January 2024.
- Affordable Accommodation: Estonia is known for its budget-friendly accommodation options. Whether you prefer a cozy guesthouse or a trendy hostel, you’ll find a wide range of choices to suit all budgets.

As well as flights, we also source you the best value accommodation, filtering out poor locations and poorly rated choices. Note that direct flights may not exist from your chosen airport.

Gran Canaria, Spain
One of our favourite cheap winter destinations. If you’re looking to escape the winter chill, Gran Canaria, one of Spain’s Canary Islands, is the perfect destination. With its mild winter weather and lots to see and do, this island is a paradise for budget-conscious travellers.
Winter Highlights:
- Mild Climate: Gran Canaria enjoys a warm winter climate. You can still enjoy the sun, beautiful beaches, and outdoor activities while much of Europe shivers.
- Hiking and Nature: Explore the island’s diverse landscapes, from the lush greenery of the north to the impressive sand dunes of Maspalomas in the south. There are lots of hiking trails and parks to enjoy without spending a fortune.
- Affordable Eateries: Gran Canaria offers a wide range of dining options that cater to various budgets.
- Get the bus to Puerto de Morgan. One of our favourite little towns on the island. Known as the little Venice of Gran Canaria. This colourful town is located right by a beach making it a great place to spend the day whilst spending very little! We have a blog post on our recent winter trip that you can read here.

Albufeira, Portugal
The Algarve is famous for its stunning coast line and pleasant year round climate. Winter hotel prices drop to unbelievable lows making it an ideal budget-friendly winter destination. Albufeira boasts picturesque beaches, a charming old town, and is one of the more lively resorts during the winter months. When it comes to cheap winter destinations, it doesn’t get much better than this!
Winter Highlights:
- Beautiful Beaches: While swimming might be off the table in winter, the Algarve’s beaches are still a sight to behold. Take leisurely walks along the shore or relax in one of the beachfront cafés. We love to wrap up warm and take a picnic down to one of the many empty beaches!
- Old Town Charm: Albufeira’s old town is a wonderful place to explore, with its narrow streets, whitewashed buildings, and lots going on. Enjoy the local culture and cuisine at affordable prices. Many resorts in the Algarve close down in the winter, but Albufeira remains lively all year round.
- Budget-Friendly Activities: The Algarve offers lots of low-cost activities, such as visiting local markets, hiking along scenic coastal trails, enjoying picnics at the beach or taking a boat trip to the local caves. It isn’t uncommon to spot dolphins along the way!

There’s no need to let the winter blues get you down. Make the most of reduced prices and plan an adventure to one of these cheap winter destinations. With affordable accommodation, wallet-friendly activities, and a unique blend of history and natural beauty, these destinations offer something for everyone. Perfect for those seeking an unforgettable experience without breaking the bank.
