Flying from Glasgow or Edinburgh Airports?
Flying from Glasgow or Edinburgh?
If you’re a parent, a planner, or just someone who likes to avoid unnecessary airport stress, this guide is for you.
Having flown through both Glasgow and Edinburgh airports more times than I can count (with kids in tow!), I’ve picked up on a few insider tips and time-savers – especially around lounges, security, and family-friendly facilities.
Best Time to Fly from Glasgow Airport
- Saturday afternoons are by far the quietest time of the week at Glasgow Airport.
If you’re looking for a calm atmosphere to get through security without the queues (especially with kids), this is your golden window. - Sunday afternoons, on the other hand? Avoid if you can. It’s one of the busiest times and the queues can be brutal.
Family & Baby Facilities at Glasgow Airport:
- There’s an excellent baby feeding room, located near the departure gates (we’ll confirm exact gate later).
It’s huge, full of couches, changing facilities, and even a private breastfeeding room—ideal for calming little ones before a flight.
Family & Baby Facilities at Edinburgh Airport:
- I’m told there’s a Sensory Room near Gate 10, especially helpful for families travelling with children with additional needs (Sunflower lanyard users welcome).
A quiet space for overstimulated kids or those who just need a calm moment.
We ALWAYS get a Boots meal deal each for the plane because in-flight catering is never guaranteed on flights from Scotland. Or you may find yourself sitting on the runway for a long period with no refreshments. Boots has saved our skin more than once. Extra hack- we buy all our nappies from Boots and then use our rewards points for our airport meal deals
Lounges: Are They Worth It?
Glasgow airport lounges:
- Lomond Lounge – Better food and comfort, but no children allowed.
- UpperDeck Lounge – Decent views where kids can watch planes glide, but don’t expect high-end food or drinks.
Verdict: Don’t pay for it unless it’s free with your credit card perks (e.g. Amex- referral link with extra points on my insta). Paying £160 for a family of four? Total rip-off.
Edinburgh airport lounges:
- Plaza Premium Lounge –Technically has a “kids zone”, but it’s underwhelming. Gets very crowded, defeating the purpose of a lounge. Only worth it if you’re getting access for free or with a big discount using the Smart Traveller app.
- Aspire Lounge – Better food, but no play area.
Security & Scanners: What to Expect at Glasgow and Edinburgh airports
- Edinburgh airport has a family lane at security.
- Both airports now use full-body scanners.
You are legally entitled to opt out of this. We do, and instead request a private search.
Be aware this might involve a short wait, so plan ahead and arrive early. - Returning flights: Neither airport offers a family lane at passport control on return, which can be frustrating.
Top tip: Ask a member of staff politely to fast-track your family. Mention the kids need the toilet or are getting distressed—they’ll usually help.
Parking Tips for Glasgow and Edinburgh airports:
- Holiday Extras consistently offers the best parking rates for both airports.
- Edinburgh FastDrop is excellent—you drop your keys in a machine, and the car is parked for you while you walk to the terminal. Super smooth. It’s by far the quickest parking option.
Glasgow and Edinburgh Airports: Overall
- Don’t waste money on Glasgow & Edinburgh lounges unless they’re complimentary or you’re on a friends’ trip and the inclusive drinks will be worth it (or, of course, if you’re fortunate enough to be in the Emirates lounge)
- Choose your flight times strategically – Saturday afternoons in Glasgow are a dream, while Sundays are chaos.
- Use the quiet areas and family lane in Edinburgh and the feeding suite in Glasgow – both are brilliant resources for families.
- Be confident in opting out of scanners if you so wish or requesting help at passport control – you’re well within your rights.
Travelling with kids doesn’t need to be stressful – it just takes a bit of insider planning!
