Brussels boasts numerous must-see attractions that cater to a variety of interests. The Grand Place, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is renowned for its opulent guildhalls and vibrant flower markets. The Atomium, a futuristic building and museum, offers panoramic city views. Manneken Pis, the famous statue of a peeing boy, embodies the city’s quirky spirit. The Royal Palace is open to the public in summer and showcases luxurious rooms and regal history. Art enthusiasts will appreciate the Magritte Museum, dedicated to the surrealist works of René Magritte. Don’t miss the Gothic architecture of St. Michael and St. Gudula Cathedral and the contemporary exhibitions at the MIMA Museum.
Brussels offers excellent public transport options, making it easy to explore. The STIB/MIVB network includes a comprehensive metro system, trams, and buses that cover most tourist spots and neighbourhoods. Tickets can be purchased at stations, kiosks, or via mobile apps. For a more active option, consider renting a bike; Brussels has a growing number of bike lanes and rental stations. Walking is also a pleasant way to see the city, especially in the compact and pedestrian-friendly city centre. Taxis and ride-sharing services like Uber are readily available for convenience.
The best time to visit Brussels is during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These seasons offer mild weather, fewer crowds, and vibrant city events. Spring is perfect for enjoying blooming flowers and the Brussels Flower Carpet event in August, which transforms the Grand Place with a colourful flower display. Autumn brings beautiful foliage and cultural festivals. Winter can be cold but is magical with Christmas markets and festive decorations, while summer is warm and lively, ideal for outdoor cafes and street festivals.
Brussels is a culinary delight with a variety of local foods to try. Start with Belgian waffles, available in two main types: Brussels waffles (light and crispy) and Liège waffles (denser and sweeter). Belgian chocolate is world-famous, with many shops offering handcrafted pralines. Fries, or “frites,” are a Belgian staple, often served with a variety of sauces. Moules-frites (mussels and fries) is a classic dish, especially popular in brasseries. Stoofvlees, a rich beef stew cooked in Belgian beer, is another must-try. Pair your meals with a Belgian beer, with options ranging from Trappist ales to fruity lambics.
Yes, Brussels is very family-friendly, offering numerous activities for children and adults alike. Mini-Europe is a miniature park with replicas of famous European landmarks, perfect for kids to explore. The Comic Strip Museum celebrates Belgium’s comic book heritage with exhibits on Tintin and the Smurfs. Parc du Cinquantenaire features wide open spaces for picnics and play, as well as museums and an impressive triumphal arch. The Royal Greenhouses of Laeken are a beautiful and educational visit when open to the public. Many museums have interactive exhibits and family programs, ensuring a fun and educational experience for all ages.

Unpopular opinion - but babies aren’t the worst encounter you could have in upper class….
I feel like I am on my own when I say this, but upper/business class is very overrated. People told me I’d never want to go back to economy, but luckily for me, I’m much more of an economy girl at heart. I did another business flight shortly after this in the Q Suite with Qatar, and I got the sh*t’s from their lobster mac and cheese - that was the nail in the coffin for my brief encounter with the boujee life 🫡

The fact I caught him saying this on camera 😭🥰
We managed to visit the Maldives on a budget by staying on local islands as opposed to expensive resort islands. These islands are much cheaper, not only for accommodation but for the day trips too. All of these experiences would have cost a fortune from a resort. A full day renting a boat for our family, seeing dolphins, sharks, sting rays and even lunch was only £160 for us all!

We did this as part of our budget Lapland trip!
(Give us a follow for tons more great travel ideals 🫶🏻)
This stay in itself wasn’t particularly budget, but, the joy of cutting back in all the other areas means things like this become affordable! @lakeinarimobilecabins offers this experience along with lots of other day trips and fun activities.
I have a whole blog post on how we did a week in Lapland for under £3000 (including everything from the clothes we bought to petrol!)
