FAQs

Absolutely! Gdansk is a coastal city steeped in history, from its role in the Hanseatic League to being the site where World War II began. With its beautifully restored Old Town, lively cultural scene, and proximity to the Baltic Sea, it offers something for every traveler. Whether you’re into history, architecture, or simply want to enjoy its scenic atmosphere, Gdansk is a must-visit destination in Poland.

Three days is a good amount of time to fully enjoy Gdansk’s main attractions. Spend a day exploring the Old Town and its iconic landmarks like the Neptune Fountain, St. Mary’s Church, and the Gdansk Crane. Dedicate another day to visiting the European Solidarity Centre or WWII Museum. On the third day, you can relax at nearby beaches or take a day trip to the seaside resort of Sopot or the magnificent Malbork Castle, one of the largest medieval castles in Europe.

Gdansk is known for its rich history, including being the birthplace of the Solidarity movement that contributed to the fall of communism in Europe. It’s also famous for its amber, often referred to as “Baltic gold,” which you can find in numerous jewelry shops throughout the city. The Old Town, with its colourful facades and medieval buildings, is one of the most picturesque areas in Poland, attracting visitors for its beauty and historical significance.

Gdansk is quite affordable compared to many European cities, making it an excellent destination for budget travellers. You can find reasonably priced accommodations, ranging from hostels to mid-range hotels. Dining is also inexpensive, with many restaurants offering hearty Polish meals like pierogi and fish dishes at low costs. Entrance fees to major attractions are generally affordable, and many public spaces, like the Old Town and beaches, are free to enjoy.

Yes, during the summer months, the nearby beaches of Gdansk, like Stogi and Brzeźno, are perfect for swimming. The Baltic Sea waters can be chilly, but they’re clean and refreshing, especially on a warm day. These beaches are easily accessible by tram or bus from the city centre, and they offer beautiful sandy shores, lifeguarded swimming areas, and plenty of facilities for a relaxing day by the sea.

Ksamil is a town on the Albanian Riviera and has had some very mixed reviews over the years, and I think a lot of that comes down to when you visit.

We absolutely loved our trip. It was incredibly affordable too - we paid £190 for six nights in an apartment that slept five! (This was in 2023) I’ve written a full blog post about the trip over on the website, where I’ve shared some great-value accommodation options and tips if you’re thinking about booking something similar.

Comment BLOG and I’ll send you the link along with some cheap flights and info on how to get there!

Expect things like:

🍻 £1.50 pints
🦐 Seafood dishes for under £10
☀️ Beautiful, crystal-clear beaches

We visited in May, when there were very few other people around. The town was just starting to open up for the season, the weather was lovely, and it felt relaxed and easy to enjoy.

June also seems like a great time to visit – a few more things open, but still without the peak summer crowds.

July and August appear to be a very different experience. The town is quite small, and it struggles to cope with the number of visitors in peak season. It can feel very crowded, and prices - particularly for things like sun loungers - can become very steep because of the demand.

So if Ksamil is on your list, timing really is everything!
