FAQs

The best time to visit Amsterdam is during the spring (April to early June) and Autumn (September to November). Spring is particularly popular due to the blooming tulips, especially at the Keukenhof Gardens. Autumn offers mild weather and fewer tourists.

If you enjoy winter activities and festive decorations, December can be charming with the city’s Christmas markets and light festivals.

Amsterdam is very accessible and easy to navigate. Cycling is the most popular mode of transportation among locals and tourists alike, thanks to the city’s extensive bike lanes. Public transportation, including trams, buses, and the metro, are efficient and reliable.

Walking is also a pleasant way to explore the city, especially within the central areas.

Some must-see attractions in Amsterdam include:

  • Rijksmuseum: A world-renowned museum housing Dutch art and history from the Middle Ages to the present day.
  • Van Gogh Museum: Home to the largest collection of Van Gogh’s paintings and drawings.
  • Anne Frank House: A poignant museum dedicated to the Jewish wartime diarist Anne Frank.
  • Vondelpark: The largest city park in Amsterdam, ideal for leisurely strolls or picnics.
  • Canal Cruise: Exploring Amsterdam’s famous canals is a unique and scenic way to see the city.

Yes, here are a few cultural etiquette tips:

  • Cycling Etiquette: Always stay alert and be respectful of cyclists. Use bike lanes where possible, and remember that cyclists often have the right of way.
  • Personal Space: The Dutch value their personal space, so avoid unnecessary physical contact, like hugging or standing too close.
  • Dining: Tipping is appreciated but not obligatory; rounding up the bill or leaving about 10% is common practice.
  • Communication: The Dutch are direct in communication. Don’t be surprised by their straightforwardness; it’s not considered rude but rather honest and efficient.
  • Avoid arrogance: Boastfulness isn’t common in Dutch culture

Amsterdam offers a variety of delicious local foods you should try:

  • Stroopwafels: A sweet treat made of two thin waffles with a caramel-like syrup filling.
  • Herring: Often eaten raw with onions and pickles, it’s a traditional Dutch delicacy.
  • Poffertjes: Small, fluffy pancakes served with powdered sugar and butter.
  • Bitterballen: Deep-fried meatballs typically served with mustard.
  • Dutch Cheese: Gouda, Edam, and Leyden cheeses are must-tries, available in many local markets and shops.

Keep up to date...

I’m putting myself out there with this post and know I’ll get some stick for it, but whether kids should be shared online is an interesting topic (when people can discuss and explain their opinions nicely without being a d*ck) and it may answer some questions you’ve thought but not wanted to ask me.

I’ve thought about it a lot, obviously, given the work we do. This is just my opinion. I’d be interested to hear yours ❤️

I am SO bad at keeping secrets… and this has been a big one!

It has always been a dream of mine to publish a book, so when I got a genuine book deal, it was VERY hard to not shout it from the roof tops! Excitement turned into panic when I realised I actually had to write a whole book... but it’s been an incredible journey.

This is more than just a travel book - I share things I’ve never spoken about publicly before, including some difficult moments to revisit, alongside everything I know about bargain family travel.

Thank you @dkeyewitness for bringing my ideas to life, and to @belllomaxmoreton and @mackenzieweller_management for believing in me from the very start ❤️🙏🏻

We made it work - and you can too.

If there’s one thing I’ve learnt since having kids, it’s that your life will be chaotic and wild whether you’re sat at home, in Tescos or on a beach somewhere lush - I know where I’ll be 😅🍹

We have always been budget travellers, and our followers are always shocked at the price we spend on our trips. Follow along for tips, inspo and help getting your family out there ❤️

Taking little Kids to Japan - My honest opinion 🙃

Pros:
👶🏻 In general, it’s a country that loves kids (quiet kids… see con #1)
✨ Toilets are cleaner than your kitchen.
🚽 Toilets are fun (the “bum spray” will never lose its novelty with a 5 year old)
🎢 Disney parks are much cheaper than in the US/EU
❤️ Very safe country.
😸 They love a cartoon character. Themed cafes are everywhere.

Cons:
🤫 It is a very quiet culture. Japanese children are very well behaved. If yours are anything like mine, you’ll get a few side eyes.
✈️ Travelling so far east = Crazy jet lag - Not fun with little ones who want to get ready at 3am.
🍽️ Tiny restaurants aren’t pram friendly, and it was rare anywhere had a baby chair.
🛏️ A family room often turned out to be one double bed for us all to share. Not one place we stayed had a baby cot.

We actually had a great holiday, but it isn’t one for the faint hearted. If a cute Eurocamp holiday in France is level 1 of the family holiday world, this was definitely level 50 😅

💻 I’ve got a blog post on our website with our itinerary and what the 3 week trip cost us ❤️
