Single Parent Travel FAQs

Yes, it is generally safe to travel as a single parent, especially with proper planning. However, safety depends on your destination, accommodations, and preparation. Opt for family-friendly destinations with low crime rates, ensure you have local emergency contacts, and keep copies of important documents. Also, always have a way to communicate – local SIM card or international roaming – and share your itinerary with someone you trust.

Yes! Here are the best out there at the moment:

Jet2holidays

This can also be combined with our discounts.

TUI

A unique discount code will pop up once the website realises you’re travelling as a single parent.

Yes, you can take your child abroad as a single parent, but there are legal requirements you should be aware of in some cases.

What you may need (but we never have personally):

  • Valid passports for both you and your child.

  • A parental consent letter from the other parent (especially for international travel).

  • Birth certificate to prove your relationship to the child.

  • Custody or court order documents if applicable.

We’ve never had any issues with this, but it’s worth bearing in mind.

  • Bring documentation to avoid problems:
  • Child’s birth certificate – showing your relationship to the child.

  • Parental consent letter – especially if you’re separated/divorced and traveling alone.

  • A copy of divorce decree, marriage certificate, or court order may also help if relevant.

  • Some countries may require notarized or translated documents.

  • Managing luggage and kids can be challenging, but smart packing and strategy help:
  • Use backpacks or rolling carry-ons to keep hands free.

  • Consider luggage delivery services to send bags to your hotel.

  • Give kids a small backpack with their own essentials and entertainment.

  • Use a baby carrier or stroller if traveling with young children.

  • Practice moving around at home with all your gear before the trip.

Besides passports and visas, you may need:

  • Parental consent letter from the non-traveling parent.

  • Child’s birth certificate (to prove relationship).

  • Custody documents (if applicable).

  • Some countries may require notarized consent forms or additional documentation, especially for international travel.
Always check the specific entry/exit requirements of the countries you’re visiting.

Preparation is key:

  • Have a list of emergency contacts, embassies, and hospitals.

  • Get comprehensive travel insurance that covers both you and your child.

  • Carry a first-aid kit, medications, and copies of health records.

  • Teach your child basic safety rules (like knowing your phone number or hotel).

  • Have a digital backup of all documents on your phone/cloud.

  • Involve your child in planning: Let them choose an activity or destination.
  • Maintain routines (bedtime, meals) as much as possible.

  • Pack plenty of snacks, entertainment, and comfort items (like a favorite toy).

  • Build in rest days or slower travel to avoid burnout.

  • Choose kid-friendly accommodations (with pools, play areas, or kitchenettes).

Essentials include:

  • Travel documents, consent letters, and health insurance cards.

  • Snacks, water bottles, wet wipes, and hand sanitizer.

  • Entertainment for your child: books, games, tablets, headphones.

  • Power bank and universal adapter.

  • Medications and a basic first-aid kit.

  • Lightweight, easy-to-carry bags (preferably with wheels or backpacks).

Note: This is not legal advice – just information I’ve found online!

It mainly depends on your legal situation and your country’s laws.

In most cases:

  • If both parents have legal parental responsibility, you need the other parent’s consent to take the child abroad.

  • Traveling without consent could be considered child abduction, even if you’re the primary caregiver.

What to do:

  • Get a signed consent letter from the other parent, ideally notarized, stating:

    • Their full name and contact details

    • Permission for you to travel with the child

    • Travel dates and destination

  • Carry a copy of your child’s birth certificate or court order showing custody rights.

Exceptions:

  • If you have a sole custody court order, you may not need the other parent’s permission – but always check the laws in your country and those of your destination.
