Things to Do at Christmas | Edinburgh
Looking for things to do at Christmas in Edinburgh? I’ve got you covered!
As if the city isn’t already magical enough throughout the year, the Christmas season transforms the Scottish capital into a true winter wonderland. Each year, from late November until early January, the city bursts into life with Christmas markets, dazzling light trails, ice skating, and countless festive attractions.
In particular, most of the main buzz sits around Princes Street Gardens and George Street. Both areas are easy to reach by train, tram, or bus. Whether you’re staying in the city centre or even just visiting for the day, getting around is simple, and as a result, exploring becomes even easier for families with children.
With that in mind, here’s our guide to things to do at Christmas in Edinburgh.

Edinburgh Christmas Markets 2025
Dates: 15 November – 4 January
Edinburgh Christmas Markets rank among the city’s biggest festive attractions. Although they are a tad smaller than in previous years, they still create a beautiful setting in Princes Street Gardens. Framed by Edinburgh Castle as the backdrop, sparkling lights overhead, and wooden stalls lining the paths, the markets offer the perfect place to begin your Christmas weekend.
As you explore, you can wander through traditional stalls in search of gifts and festive treats, hop on the Ferris wheel for panoramic views, or warm up with mulled wine and delicious street food.
If you’re travelling with children, however, keep in mind that the markets can get quite busy. For this reason, visiting in the morning or later in the afternoon works best. By doing so, you can enjoy a calmer atmosphere and gradually watch the market shift from a lively daytime hub into a glittering evening scene.

Edinburgh Walking Tour with Gingerbread Treat
Dates: December
If you want a festive way to explore Edinburgh this Christmas, this walking tour is a delight. It lasts about around 1.5 hours which is great if you are with kids and it includes a traditional gingerbread treat which will be a winner for adults and kids alike. This tour will take you through the main sights of Christmas in Edinburgh helping you to navigate the busy city.

The Dome Edinburgh at Christmas
Dates: 20 October – 11 January
Without a doubt, few places capture the spirit of “Christmas in Edinburgh” quite like The Dome on George Street. Every year, its festive decorations are world-famous, featuring towering trees, sparkling chandeliers, and outdoor displays that are not to be missed if you’re wandering the city this holiday season.
When it comes to dining, enjoying a meal in The Grill Room beside the iconic tree is a sought-after experience, with reservations often booked as early as March. However, if you miss out, it’s worth checking online for cancellations. Even so, the twinkling exterior pillars and the grand atrium tree still provide a must-see photo opportunity.

Christmas at the Botanics: Edinburgh Light Trail
Dates: 20 November – 30 December
Christmas at the Botanics offers one of the most magical festive experiences in the city. The illuminated trail transforms the Royal Botanic Garden of Edinburgh into a glowing wonderland filled with light sculptures, tunnels, and projections.
Families particularly enjoy this event thanks to its quieter, more relaxed atmosphere compared to the bustling markets. Along the route, you’ll find festive food stalls, hot chocolate, and a gift shop with unique presents. Having visited numerous light installations across Scotland, this one remains my favourite, offering a fantastic experience at a reasonable price.
Price: adults (16+): £25, children (3-16): £18.50, under 3: free
Edinburgh: Holiday Donut Adventure Tour
Dates: 15 November – 4 January
This unique holiday tour is perfect for anyone with a sweet tooth. You’ll join a friendly local guide for a delicious walk through some of Edinburgh’s most famous streets, stopping along the way for handpicked donut tastings. As you indulge, your guide will share insider recommendations on the best local spots to eat and drink. With its mix of sweet flavours, city stories, and cheerful atmosphere, this tour is a fun-filled donut adventure in Scotland’s beautiful capital.

Castle of Light: Edinburgh Castle Illuminations
Dates: 21 November – 4 January
At the top of the Royal Mile, the Castle of Light event brings Edinburgh Castle to life with spectacular light projections and storytelling. This unique evening experience showcases the city’s most iconic landmark in an entirely new way. Visitors can also enjoy fire pits for roasting marshmallows and a variety of festive food stalls on site.

Family tickets available.

Ice Skating in Edinburgh at Christmas
Dates: 20 November – 4 January
The George Street ice rink is a classic family activity at Christmas. Skating beneath the festive lights is magical, and there are dedicated Tot Sessions perfect for little ones trying ice skating for the first time. Local residents with an EH postcode can also claim a 20% discount.
Prices: adults £15, children £11

Edinburgh Zoo’s Giant Lanterns
Dates: 14 November – 24 February
This family-friendly event is a unique illuminated trail set within Edinburgh Zoo, featuring an enchanting underwater theme. The larger-than-life installations are beautifully hand-crafted lanterns, created by Chinese artists using traditional techniques. In addition to regular entry, the event also offers adults-only evenings and Quiet Nights, which feature lower music levels for those who prefer a calmer, more peaceful atmosphere. As the trail takes place after dark, you won’t see any of the zoo’s animals; however, VIP tickets are available. These include day admission to the zoo, an evening meal, and entry to the Giant Lanterns at a reduced combined rate.
Price: Adult (Age 16+): from £19, Child (Age 3-15): from £14.50

I am SO bad at keeping secrets… and this has been a big one!
It has always been a dream of mine to publish a book, so when I got a genuine book deal, it was VERY hard to not shout it from the roof tops! Excitement turned into panic when I realised I actually had to write a whole book... but it’s been an incredible journey.
This is more than just a travel book - I share things I’ve never spoken about publicly before, including some difficult moments to revisit, alongside everything I know about bargain family travel.
Thank you @dkeyewitness for bringing my ideas to life, and to @belllomaxmoreton and @mackenzieweller_management for believing in me from the very start ❤️🙏🏻

We made it work - and you can too.
If there’s one thing I’ve learnt since having kids, it’s that your life will be chaotic and wild whether you’re sat at home, in Tescos or on a beach somewhere lush - I know where I’ll be 😅🍹
We have always been budget travellers, and our followers are always shocked at the price we spend on our trips. Follow along for tips, inspo and help getting your family out there ❤️

Taking little Kids to Japan - My honest opinion 🙃
Pros:
👶🏻 In general, it’s a country that loves kids (quiet kids… see con #1)
✨ Toilets are cleaner than your kitchen.
🚽 Toilets are fun (the “bum spray” will never lose its novelty with a 5 year old)
🎢 Disney parks are much cheaper than in the US/EU
❤️ Very safe country.
😸 They love a cartoon character. Themed cafes are everywhere.
Cons:
🤫 It is a very quiet culture. Japanese children are very well behaved. If yours are anything like mine, you’ll get a few side eyes.
✈️ Travelling so far east = Crazy jet lag - Not fun with little ones who want to get ready at 3am.
🍽️ Tiny restaurants aren’t pram friendly, and it was rare anywhere had a baby chair.
🛏️ A family room often turned out to be one double bed for us all to share. Not one place we stayed had a baby cot.
We actually had a great holiday, but it isn’t one for the faint hearted. If a cute Eurocamp holiday in France is level 1 of the family holiday world, this was definitely level 50 😅
💻 I’ve got a blog post on our website with our itinerary and what the 3 week trip cost us ❤️
