Ski trips have a bit of a reputation for being expensive. Between lift passes, accommodation, equipment hire and food, costs can spiral very quickly – especially if you’re used to looking at the Alps. But every now and then, you stumble across a destination that feels like a bit of a bargain secret… and Bansko, Bulgaria is exactly that.

This trip felt like a real reminder that skiing can still be affordable, relaxed and fun – especially if you’re travelling as a family or in a group.

Bansko Bulgaria

Where is Bansko?

Bansko Bulgaria is a small mountain town in south-west Bulgaria, right at the foot of the beautiful Pirin Mountains. It’s Bulgaria’s most popular ski resort, but it still feels far less commercial than many of the big-name resorts in Western Europe.

The nearest airport is Sofia, which is where you’ll fly into. From Sofia Airport, it’s roughly a 2-3 hour transfer to Bansko, depending on traffic and weather. Transfers are easy to arrange, and many chalets and hotels (including Snomads where we stayed) will organise this for you.

Despite sounding long, the journey is straightforward and absolutely worth it once you arrive. You’re rewarded with snowy mountain views, a charming old town, and a ski resort that feels friendly, manageable and great value – especially if you’re travelling with children or in a group.

Getting to Bansko Bulgaria from the UK

Flying to Bansko from the UK is easier (and cheaper) than you might think. We flew from Manchester to Sofia Airport, which is the main international airport for this part of Bulgaria. There are direct flights from many UK cities, and if you book early, you can often find really good deals.

What we spent on flights:

Our flights for 2 adults, a child and a baby came to £360 return. This included seat reservation and a large check in suitcase. We travelled on the 11th January and stayed for a week.

Once in Sofia, it’s about a 2-3 hour transfer to Bansko. Options include:

Private transfer – quickest and easiest if you want door-to-door service, especially with luggage or kids.

Shared shuttle – slightly cheaper and still comfortable.

Public bus – the most budget-friendly, though slower and less convenient if you’re carrying ski gear.

For us, the transfer was included with our chalet stay through Snomads, which made it really easy – pick-up at the airport, drop-off at the chalet, and the same on the way back. Honestly, if you can organise a transfer like this, it removes a lot of stress after a long day of travelling.

Where we stayed: Chalet Supreme by Snomads

We were incredibly lucky to stay in Chalet Supreme, hosted by Snomads, which was gifted to us following a fab stay we had in Zakopane last year. For reference, a stay in Chalet Supreme during the same week in 2027 costs £2472 for the week – thats £618 per room. This includes airport transfers, shuttle to the gondola, breakfasts each morning and 3 dinners. Bargain.

The chalet is gorgeous. It is warm, spacious, and perfectly designed for a ski holiday – cosy communal areas, comfortable bedrooms, and that “home from home” feeling that makes a ski trip really relaxing.

The food was a real highlight: three nights of home-cooked dinners and breakfast every morning, all freshly prepared and absolutely delicious. The chalet also runs shuttles to and from the mountain, which makes mornings and evenings stress-free:

  • Morning: 7:30–9:00am
  • Afternoon: 4:00–5:00pm

Not having to queue for buses or worry about taxis made the days feel much more relaxed – especially with kids.

Our host Irena made sure everything ran smoothly and we didn’t have to waste any time with logistics.

They provide great accommodation and a stress-free experience, which is especially great for first time skiers and families.

Ski Hire in Bansko

We hired all our ski gear through Alpy.com, and it was really reasonable. My family hired skis, boots, helmets and poles, for 2 adults and 1 child is was 173 euros which is around £150. This was for 6 days of hire. Everything was straightforward to organise, the kit was in good condition, and the staff were helpful. Alpy is a great website that offers ski hire in tons of resorts across Europe.

Snomads have their own ski shop at the chalet, so super convenient to sort out when you arrive there.

We found 5 days skiing was perfect. It gave us a day to relax with the kids after arriving, and start skiing / lessons on day 2. We arrived on a Sunday night, relaxed for the evening and skied Monday – Friday.

You can currently get a discount on your ski hire with Alpy using code TRAVELMUM

Ski Lessons in Bansko

Snomads helped us arrange great value ski lessons with a British snow school called Method. Our children ranged between 3 and 7 years old, and after a little bit of practice with their instructor, they turned into tiny, fearless skiing machines. Us adults? Didn’t take to it so easily!

By the end of day 1, the children were mastering turns and stops, while the adults were just about mastering how to stay upright.

Lesson Prices

  • Kids: €60 / £53 per child for 2 hours group lesson (our 4 kids in the group)
  • Adults: €74 / £65 per adult for 2 hours (2 adults one instructor)

Ski Slopes in Bansko

One of the things I really liked about skiing in Bansko is how well it caters for all abilities – especially families and mixed groups where not everyone wants to hurl themselves down a black run before lunch.

The slopes are laid out in a way that lets beginners build confidence gradually, without feeling thrown in at the deep end. Here’s a breakdown of some of the main areas and runs:

Bunderishka Polyana
This is a lovely flat, open area and the perfect starting point for beginners. It’s where many people take their very first ski steps, and it feels safe, calm and unintimidating — ideal for little ones and nervous adults alike.

The Ski Road
Once you’re feeling a bit more confident, The Ski Road is the natural next step. It’s gentle enough to feel manageable but long enough to practise turns, stopping and controlling speed without panic setting in.

Banderitsa
An easy slope served by a chairlift, which feels like a bit of a milestone if you’re new to skiing. It’s a great run for practising technique while still feeling relaxed.

Plato

This slope is a bit more dynamic and comes with beautiful views, which is always a bonus when you’re stopping every few minutes to catch your breath (or pretend you’re admiring the scenery).

Balkaniada
A medium-level slope that works well for both improving beginners and more confident skiers. It’s wide and varied, making it a good option if your group includes different ability levels.

Shiligarnik
Another easy run, but with a more varied track, which makes it great for developing skills and confidence. It’s a nice step up without feeling overwhelming.

Tomba

This is where things get serious. Tomba is a black, World Cup-level slope, designed for advanced skiers only. Fast, steep and challenging – definitely one to admire from afar if you’re still mastering the basics (speaking from experience).

Tomba’s Sleeve
An equally challenging offshoot of Tomba, perfect for those who actively enjoy that level of difficulty. Again, not one for beginners… or clumsy Travel Mums with a history of skiing mishaps.

Lift Passes in Bansko

Snomads provided us with passes that we could top up from the Chalet.

Lift Pass Prices:
  • Children up to 6.99 and seniors 75+: €0.60 / 52p
  • Adults Half Day (after 12:30pm): €46 / £40
  • Adults Full Day: €59 / £51.40

We bought lift passes for the first couple of days, intending to make the most of them. But we soon realised we could get away without one most days… as beginners we didn’t really need to use the bigger lifts.

The Gondola to get up the mountain has a huge queue in the morning. We quickly realised it was better to get the shuttle bus up the mountain. This was €6 per seat (we put our kids on our lap). Once up there we were mainly using the small slopes with the magic carpet lifts (which don’t have the barriers to scan a pass). Occasionally someone would say ‘show me your pass’ but they didn’t have anything to scan it. So we would show the card Snomads gave us, and they’d nod and let us go! The snow road allows you to ski to the bottom of the mountain meaning you can do a good run without needing a lift. It’s a great route for the kids to put their new skills to good use. (They skied down brilliantly, I injured my knee attempting it and ended my ski career!)

We are always stingy and on the look out for ways to save money, so this worked well for us. I’d recommend buying passes day by day so you can assess what you will actually need. If anyone ends up injured or unwell, a week long ski pass could end up being a lot of wasted money.

When you aren’t skiing…

Bansko isn’t just about skiing. If you have little ones, half a day on the slopes can be enough to tire them out, and having other activities planned makes the trip more varied.

1. Relax in the Thermal Spa

One of the highlights for the rest of the group was visiting one of Bansko’s thermal spas. After a long day on the slopes, they soaked in the warm, mineral-rich pools and came back raving about how relaxing it was. I missed out thanks to my knee injury that day (yes, I was very jealous), but they told me €13 / £11.30 bought a round of four alcoholic drinks, which made me even more bitter about my self-imposed snow exile.

2. Explore the Old Town

Bansko’s charming old town is perfect for a stroll when you need a break from skiing. Cobblestone streets, traditional architecture, and plenty of little shops and cafés make it a lovely way to spend an afternoon. You can browse for souvenirs, sample local treats, or simply enjoy a hot drink while watching the snow fall.

3. Sledging

If skiing isn’t your thing – or if, like me, you’ve been laid up after a spectacular tumble – sledging is a great alternative. There are plenty of gentle hills around the base of the gondola, and many chalets (including Snomads) provide sledges for guests. It’s fun for kids, adults, and anyone who wants to feel the thrill of snow without complicated equipment. Our baby Luca is just under 2 years old, and had lots of fun in his sledge!

4. Snowshoeing or Winter Walks

Bansko is surrounded by Pirin National Park, which is perfect for winter walks or snowshoeing. Trails vary from easy forest paths to more challenging routes for experienced walkers. Even just a short walk through the pine trees can be magical, and it’s a good way to enjoy the scenery while staying active off the slopes.

Bansko Bulgaria

Why Bansko works so well for families

Bansko is perfect if you want flexibility. You can:

  • Ski all day if you want
  • Mix skiing with spa visits, sightseeing, or town wandering
  • Keep costs down without feeling like you’re missing out

Food is affordable, accommodation options are varied, and there’s enough going on that even if someone in your group isn’t skiing (or ends up temporarily sidelined), there’s plenty to enjoy.

Cost summary for our family of 4 (with 3 people skiing and 2 needing lessons)

  • Flights: £360
  • Chalet: £618 for one room (our family slept in a room with a double bed, a single bed and a cot)
  • Transfer: Included with the above cost
  • Ski Hire: £150
  • Ski passes: £183.84 (We bought a half day and a full day before realising we didnt need to buy them!)
  • Ski Lessons: £130 for 2 days adult lessons (Me). £106 for 2 day child lessons (Leo). (My husband can already ski)

Total: £1547.84

The only other spend additional to this was lunch (we did a supermarket shop and mainly had packed lunch) and the dinners that weren’t provided by our chalet (Snomads provided dinner on 3 nights and breakfast daily).

Final Thoughts: Bansko Bulgaria as cheap ski holiday..

Bansko reminds me why I love travelling – finding great value, welcoming people, and experiences that don’t cost the earth.

Between Chalet Supreme, the shuttle convenience, ski hire through Alpy, the mountain views, seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces and even my slightly bruised ego, it was a trip I’ll remember for all the right reasons.

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly ski destination that works for families and groups, Bansko Bulgaria is absolutely worth considering.

Is 5 too young to ski?!

We are in no way a cool “ski family” who could help him learn, which is why we wanted a budget friendly ski destination with cheap lessons and lots of other things for kids to do (just incase he hated skiing!)

We are currently in Zakopane in Poland and are sharing everything we are getting up to on our Instagram stories. If you’ve missed the first 3 days I have put them in a highlight called “Ski Trip” so you can catch up!

Follow along for more information ⛷️❤️ I’ll be writing an in depth blog post when I’m home with exactly how you can replicate our trip.

We are staying with a fantastic company called @snomads_ski who have helped us get the best ski instructors, arrange ski hire and transported us to the slopes 🎿

When people see pictures of this place they instantly think of the Maldives! But lucky for us, it’s a lot closer to home (if you live in Europe that is 😅)

Ksamil is a small village on the Albanian Riviera. It has been growing in popularity over the last few years and for very good reason. The beaches are absolutely amazing, the food is delicious and you can travel here on a really tight budget. We were drinking pints of beer for £1.50 🍻 Eating delicious seafood for less than £10 🦐 and our two bedroom apartment with sea view was less than £35 per night!

I’ll be posting more about our trip in the coming days.
