Nantes, France – An Honest Family Review
Nantes, France – An Honest Family Review
We decided quite last minute to head off for a long weekend. With no destination in mind, I jumped on Skyscanner and used my favourite feature – the “Everywhere” search – to find the cheapest flights from our nearest airport. Frankfurt came up as the cheapest option at just €25 return per person, but the flight times weren’t ideal. So we went with the second-cheapest: Nantes, France.
I’ll admit, I hadn’t even heard of Nantes before that search. But a quick Google reassured me there was plenty to keep us busy for a weekend away.
Getting To Nantes, France
As soon as the kids finished school on friday, we were on route to Dublin airport! Traffic was a nightmare so we arrived at the airport with just over an hour before our flight! Thankfully, though, we were through security in about 10 minutes and went straight to the gate.
Tip: It’s always worth booking parking in advance. Our go to is Looking4Parking – you can save upto 40% with code TRAVELMUML4P
The flight was under 2 hours, and we arrived around 9:30pm.
Arriving in Nantes, France
There are several ways you can get to the city when you land in Nantes, including city buses which only cost a few euro. We opted for convenience and took at taxi which was a 20 minute drive and cost €35.
There’s also an airport shuttle bus that takes you to the city centre, tickets are €10 each. You can get tickets from the driver or the ticket machine near the bus stop.
Our Hotel in Nantes, France
We arrived at our hotel, Seven Urban Suites, and found out we had been upgraded to a one bedroom apartment. We had booked into the family room, but the apartment meant we had a separate bedroom and a little more space. All rooms here have a kitchenette. We paid £240 for 3 nights. The hotel is located 2 stops on the bus from the city centre in a quiet area. There’s a bakery and a grocery store just around the corner. The staff were very welcoming, and the reception area was lovely and modern. The rooms were basic, but clean and had all the facilities needed and there was a bus stop just across the street.
Another hotel I was looking at was called Demain Hotel. This was located in the city centre, and was a really fun looking boutique hotel. Very colourful and unique. Unfortunately it was fully booked, but it’s on my list or next time!
Getting Around Nantes, France
A great thing about Nantes is free public transport on weekends! All buses and trams in the city are free for everyone. My youngest loves all things transport, so we spent a lot of time watching the trams go past and riding the trams and buses just because we could. This city is also pretty walkable. You can walk the ‘Green Line’ which will take you all around the city and the main sights. The full walk is about 12.4 miles.
Nantes Pass & the Tourist Centre
Le Voyage à Nantes is a great first stop in the city. The tourist centre staff were really welcoming, and it’s a good place to grab a map and ask about things to do. If you’re planning to visit lots of attractions, the Nantes Pass offers great value – covering entry to most sights, some restaurant discounts, free weekday transport, and even the airport shuttle if booked in advance.
We chose not to get the pass this time, as we preferred to stay flexible and take each day as it came. It would have saved money if we’d done all the paid attractions in one day with a 24-hour pass, but with kids, a relaxed pace worked better. I’d definitely consider the pass on a future trip.
How We Spent Our Time in Nantes, France
Chateau of the Dukes of Brittany
The tourist centre is right across from the Chateau of the Dukes of Brittany, the city’s most important historic building. It’s free to visit the courtyard, the walls around the castle and the moat gardens. Entrance to the museum is €9 (or included in Nantes Pass) for adults and free for under 18s. We opted for the free visit, and walked around the walls of this beautiful Chateau. With lovely views of the city and to the fountains across the street. My kids loved running around and playing in the castle. The courtyard is a nice space for a break after the walk around the walls.
Aire de Jeux
We took a short walk into the main area of shops and our next stop was the most important of the day- a Boulangerie. We popped into one that was quite busy, always a good sign, and ordered a selection of baguettes, croissants and other delicious looking pastries. We walked back towards the tram lines and across the street we found an incredible park for a picnic and play. In the middle of this park is a playground created by a Japanese architect that looks like a sea monster. The park called Aire de Jeux is a very cool play area with lots to climb on and even a slide out of the monster’s mouth. Nantes has lots of interactive art displays that are also play areas which is a lot of fun.
Machines de l’île
Next we took Tram line 1 to the stop Chantiers Navals, and then walked across the bridge to Machines de l’île, probably the most unique attraction in Nantes. Here a team of creative builders have set up their workshop and created the famous elephant. A larger than life mechanical elephant that walks around, and you can take a ride on. It’s impressive to see, and the kids were really in awe of the giant machine. There is also a huge carousel that you can explore and ride. You can visit the Gallery and see more of their incredible creations including mechanical animals and plants in a tree top canopy, Tickets are €11 for adults and €9 for children, under 4s are free. These tickets are included in the Nantes pass, but do not include a ride on the elephant.
We made a mistake here and didn’t properly check the opening hours. Our kids were not in ‘museum mode’ so we decided we would come back on Monday, but they weren’t open! An excuse to go back I suppose, but we really would have loved to a proper explore here.
What We Did Instead:
Instead we headed towards the big yellow crane to an art display called ’On va marcher sur la lune’ (we walked on the moon). This is a play area with a big hill to look like the moon and in the ‘craters’ are little trampolines to bounce on. It was fairly busy, but the kids loved it. There are benches for adults to rest and enjoy the view of the river. There was also a stall selling coffee and snacks.
We decided to have an afternoon break and headed back to the hotel, a short bus ride away. We popped into the shop and bought loads of local cheese, meats and other goodies to bring back with us for a French picnic in the apartment.
Talensac market
The next morning, we woke to heavy rain, but I was desperate to get to Talensac market which is only open on weekends. A bus ride and a short walk brings you to a hub of food and local goods. This place was so busy, it would be an amazing place to pick up your weekly shop if you were local. I wish we had come the day before and gotten our cheese etc from here instead. The strawberries were the most delicious I’ve ever had, and we got an amazing bottle of local wine for less than €4 ! We bought some more baguettes and pastries for the day and headed back into the centre of town. It was only a 15 minute walk.
Tourist Train
We took the Tourist Train, a covered mini-bus styled like a train, for a 45-minute tour of the city – €20 for a family of four, with guide sheets in different languages.
After the tour, we stopped at Gigg’s Irish Bar across the street for a drink. Live music was playing, wine was €5 a glass, and kids’ juices were €2.
With the sun back out, we walked to the Château of the Dukes of Brittany and stopped at the Miroir d’eau fountain across the road. The kids couldn’t resist running through the sprays and got completely soaked. We headed back to the hotel for a change – and a glass of €4 wine.
Jardin de Plantes
The evening was lovely, and off we headed to Jardin de Plantes. A sprawling botanic gardens, located right in front of the main train station. Like everything in Nantes, it has a fun artsy twist. Spot the different characters hiding in the trees, or the massive bench that you walk under. A great place for a relaxing walk, around the lake and through the gardens.
At the top end was a park and cafe. The cafe was closing when we arrived, but it had a large outdoor seating area and would be a perfect place for a coffee while the kids played. A large play area with a sand, and toys to scoop and dump the sand. A great spot. When we finally convinced the kids it was time to go and were heading out we saw a little archway to the side, we popped in and it was massive plant pots that you can climb and hid in. We had a great time playing hide and seek until it was getting dark and it was time to head back to the hotel.
Ile de Versailles
After a bit of lie in (as much as you can have with 2 kids) it was time to check out. The hotel is happy to store luggage, so we left our bags and would collect later in the day.
Now that is was a weekday, transport wasn’t free. We got a family day ticket from the machine at the bus stop, the ticket was €13 for the day.
We took the bus to Ile de Versailles, a little island within the city. There is a stunning Japanese Garden on the island. Loads of little pathways to walk down and small waterfalls all in a Japanese theme. So beautiful and relaxing.
The last thing we decided do was hire a little boat for a cruise down the river. The boats are motorised, but go very slowly, so no need for a special licence. We hired from Ruban Vert, who have several points of hire in the city. We got ours from the Ile de Versailles. They hire boats for 2 – 9 people and you can hire for an hour or a full day!
We only hired for an hour as our time was limited, and it cost €37. The staff gave us a quick run through of how to operate the boat and off we went. I was so excited to give driving a boat a try, but I was terrible at steering. I swiftly passed the wheel to my husband, who was surprisingly good! We sailed up and down the river, soaking up the sun and the views. We had a great time looking at all the houseboats docked. The river was so quiet and it was the perfect end to our weekend.
Getting to Nantes, France Airport
We headed back to the hotel to collect our luggage, and had planned to take the local transport to the airport. This would have been included in the day rate we paid and you can take the number 3 tram to Neustrie and then change to bus 98 to Aeroclub. Another option is the airport shuttle which you can collect in the city.
However once at the hotel we decided on a taxi. We were under budget for the weekend and decided to splurge on the convenience. It was a great decision as we had the loveliest taxi driver.
Nantes airport was a little confusing, when you arrive there were no signs for ‘Departures’ only signs for gates half on one side and half at opposite sides of the airport. You need to wait for your gate to be shown on the screen and then follow the signs to the gate to get to the right departures area. You will pass through a small area with a couple of shops and a cafe and then security. Food was expensive as expected and we paid €20 for two very average sandwiches. We then went through border control and then to the gate. There was a small kids play area here which was great to entertain the kids, but it wasn’t long before we were boarding and on our way back home.
Nantes, France – In Conclusion
I didn’t have many expectations before we went, but Nantes completely surprised me. The city was full of parks and play areas, and the locals were so friendly. Our kids loved playing with others, and the free public transport made it easy to get around. We stayed just outside the city, but being only two bus stops away made it no problem at all.
There’s still so much we didn’t get to see, so we’ll definitely return. Next time, I’d love to take a river boat tour or a train to the coast for a beach walk. La Cantine du Voyage looks like a great spot too, with local food and a kids play area. We also missed museums like the Natural History Museum, which are included with the Nantes Pass – available online here or at the tourist office.
The city is filled with art and blends historic charm with modern creativity. For families, it’s a 10 out of 10 and can be done on a budget. Some of the best play areas we’ve come across, and the kids had a blast. We’ll definitely be back.

Ksamil is a town on the Albanian Riviera and has had some very mixed reviews over the years, and I think a lot of that comes down to when you visit.
We absolutely loved our trip. It was incredibly affordable too - we paid £190 for six nights in an apartment that slept five! (This was in 2023) I’ve written a full blog post about the trip over on the website, where I’ve shared some great-value accommodation options and tips if you’re thinking about booking something similar.
Comment BLOG and I’ll send you the link along with some cheap flights and info on how to get there!
Expect things like:
🍻 £1.50 pints
🦐 Seafood dishes for under £10
☀️ Beautiful, crystal-clear beaches
We visited in May, when there were very few other people around. The town was just starting to open up for the season, the weather was lovely, and it felt relaxed and easy to enjoy.
June also seems like a great time to visit – a few more things open, but still without the peak summer crowds.
July and August appear to be a very different experience. The town is quite small, and it struggles to cope with the number of visitors in peak season. It can feel very crowded, and prices - particularly for things like sun loungers - can become very steep because of the demand.
So if Ksamil is on your list, timing really is everything!
