PortAventura World

Now you all know we LOVE a theme park. Make that a theme park over night stay and we are buzzing. There is something super exciting about being engulfed by the theming, being a short walk to the park, and being able to dip in and out as you please. It takes the stress out of a theme park visit, especially if you are visiting with kids. You can arrive at your leisure, and don’t feel you have to rinse every ounce of fun from the day, as you can always go back tomorrow!

PortAventura World in Spain is one of Europe’s best-loved theme parks – it’s been on our wish list for a long time now – so when MagicBreaks reached out and asked if we would like to visit and review the experience, of course we said YES!

The entire trip was arranged through MagicBreaks, which makes the whole planning process feel effortless. Flights, hotel, park tickets, and airport transfers – all sorted for you in a few clicks. It meant we could focus on enjoying ourselves from the moment we stepped off the plane.

What made this trip even more special was knowing that we were visiting a carbon-neutral theme park resort. PortAventura World is the first in the world to achieve full carbon neutrality across its operations, and we stayed at the beautiful Colorado Creek Hotel, their first carbon-neutral hotel. For us, that added a whole new level of meaning to the holiday – giving our kids a magical experience while supporting a resort that genuinely cares for the planet.

From the convenient flight and transfer to the moment we stepped into the wild west theming of our hotel, we knew we were in for something special.

In this post, I’ll share everything about our stay – how we travelled there, the perks of staying on-site, a guide to the six epic themed areas of the park, and why we’ll definitely be travelling with MagicBreaks again.

Let’s dive in!

Getting to PortAventura World

We flew from Birmingham Airport with Ryanair. There are several low-cost carriers that operate flights to Reus Airport, which is the closest airport to PortAventura World. The flight itself was just over two hours, and the journey was smooth and straightforward. Before we knew it, we were descending over the Spanish coastline, ready for some sun soaked rollercoasters!

Our private transfer was all included in the package and we were greeted by our driver just outside the arrivals hall, which meant no waiting around in queues or trying to organise a taxi/bus with tired kids in tow.

The drive from Reus Airport to PortAventura was super quick – just 15 minutes door to door. A short transfer is such a relief when travelling with kids and I know it impacts the choices you guys make when looking for your next trip. In no time we were pulling into the stunning entrance of Hotel Colorado Creek, ready to check in and start our adventure.

PortAventura World: A Sustainable Resort

One of the most surprising and impressive things about our trip to PortAventura Word was learning just how committed the resort is to protecting the environment. As a family who travels a lot for work, we’re becoming more conscious of the impact travel can have on the planet. Discovering that PortAventura World is the first carbon-neutral resort of its kind was incredible, and a great talking point for introducing the concept to our son.

Hotel Colorado Creek is not only beautifully themed around the Wild West, but is also PortAventura’s first carbon-neutral hotel. Opened in 2019, Colorado Creek was designed with sustainability in mind from day one. The hotel is powered by 100% renewable energy, and it uses smart systems to reduce water consumption, cut down on waste, and minimise its environmental footprint.

But it’s not just the hotel. In 2020, PortAventura World became the world’s first theme park resort to offset all its direct carbon emissions. They’ve invested in clean energy, planted forests, and even installed one of the largest self-consumption solar plants in a European holiday resort – which covers the equivalent of 6 football pitches! That means you can enjoy all the thrills, rides, and shows knowing that the resort is actively working to reduce its impact on the planet.

Throughout the park and hotels, you’ll notice small but important touches: recycling points, reduced plastic usage, energy-efficient lighting, and a clear effort to educate guests about sustainability. It’s a brilliant way to show families – especially children – that fun and eco-friendliness can go hand in hand.

In a world where many holidays still come with a heavy environmental cost, this is a refreshing and hopeful step in the right direction.

PortAventura-World

Colorado Creek Hotel – Is it worth staying on site?

There’s something special about staying right in the heart of the action – and Colorado Creek didn’t disappoint. From the moment we arrived we were excited by the Wild West. Think rustic wooden beams, frontier-style lanterns, cosy cabins, and a relaxed atmosphere. The hotels smell was also fabulous, a weird comment I know, but I had to mention it to Joao every time we walked in!

By staying onsite you get unlimited access to PortAventura Park, with direct entry included in the price of our stay. That meant no queues at the ticket office and no extra costs – we simply strolled in each morning, coffee in hand, ready for another day of fun. We could leave and return as often as we liked.

The hotel itself felt peaceful and spacious. The rooms were spotlessly clean and decorated in a warm, western style. Our room had everything we needed: comfy beds, air conditioning and a generous amount of space for all our stuff (and for the kids to go wild).

Another highlight was the buffet breakfast (who doesn’t love a buffet breakfast?!). With loads of variety – fresh fruit, pastries, hot options, and good coffee – it was a great start to each day. We stayed with the full board package, this meant we could get lunch within the park. They provide QR codes on their app, which you show at whichever restaurant you choose to eat at. In the evening there is a dinner buffet, which we weren’t massively excited by, but it was a convenient way to get everyone fed at the end of the day.

The staff can’t do enough for you, they said they could arrange for us to eat in Ferrari Land (which opens until 10pm) if we decided to have dinner at the park.

The pool was another big plus to staying on site. Both our sons love water, and it was HOT while we were there. Being able to leave the park, have a swim, and then mooch back in the afternoon was a great way to keep the day calm, cool and enjoyable for all. The pool was really calm, have a look at my instagram stories to hear how peaceful it was!

There are lots of great hotels you can choose from on site, you can see the list of hotels here.

PortAventura World Attractions

One of the things that makes PortAventura World so unique is how beautifully it’s divided into six themed lands – each with its own sights, sounds, flavours and rides. One thing we did notice is that the height requirements were much higher than we have seen anywhere else. Make sure you take this into account if visiting with shorter children. Set expectations early. Leo was GUTTED that he couldn’t get on the Pirate Ship with its 1.3m height requirement. It’s a ride he has enjoyed many times so it was difficult explaining why he couldn’t ride it there.

There are lots of things for shorter kids to do, just make sure you know which attractions they can ride, and direct them towards those and away from the no-goes! You can check out the height requirements here.

Here’s a little look at what you can expect from each themed area:

Mediterrània

This is the first area you walk into if arriving from the main gates and it sets the tone perfectly – it’s styled like a beautiful coastal village, complete with cobbled streets, waterfront cafés, and a lake where the nightly fireworks show takes place.

Top ride here: Furius Baco, a high-speed accelerator coaster that goes from 0 to 135 km/h in just 3 seconds! It does bash you around A LOT – but a fun and thrilling ride. You need to be 1.4m to ride.

Don’t miss: The stunning FiestAventura show in the evening, with music, water effects, and fireworks lighting up the lake.

Tip: Grab your morning coffee and pastry here if you haven’t had a hotel breakfast – it’s really peaceful before the rides open.

Polynesia

Step into a lush tropical jungle with waterfalls, palm trees, and exotic wooden huts. It’s a calm and cooling area, perfect for a slower-paced wander or escaping the midday heat.

Top rides:

  • Tutuki Splash – a volcanic-themed flume ride that will get you very wet! You need to be 1.2m to ride with an adult.
  • Kontiki – A polynesian themed Pirate Ship. You need to be 1.3m to ride with an adult

Entertainment: Live shows with traditional Polynesian music and dancing, which I loved.

Vibe: Relaxed and green – great for a bit of downtime while still keeping the theme park magic alive.

portaventura-world

SésamoAventura

This colourful land is Sesame Street-themed and designed especially for younger children. It’s bright, interactive, and full of family-friendly rides – we spent a lot of time here in the play area.

Top attractions:

  • Street Mission, an interactive dark ride where you help Grover solve a mystery. You need to be 90cm to ride with an adult
  • Magic Fish – A fun water ride. You need to be 1.2m to ride with an adult. It is similar to Hydras Challenge at Legoland where the height requirement is 1m.
  • Tami-Tami (a junior coaster). You need to be 1m to ride with an adult.

Bonus: There’s a fantastic playground for the kids to let off steam.

Tip: Visit early or late in the day – it can get busy during peak hours due to its popularity with families.

portaventura-world

China

Visually stunning, this area is home to two of the park’s biggest thrill rides and some of the best themed buildings in the resort. The music, pagodas, and lush landscaping really make this area stand out.

Top rides:

  • Shambhala – Europe’s tallest rollercoaster, my favourite in the park. A really smooth and fun ride.
  • Dragon Khan – an intense coaster with 8 inversions that’s a must for adrenaline fans.
  • Angkor – a family-friendly splash battle where you’ll likely get wet. Ideal with the hot Spanish sun!

Dining: Try the Marco Polo buffet for a relaxing sit-down lunch indoors.

Don’t miss: The play area. Lots of shade, the kids can be free, there are also two smaller rides in this area that toddlers can ride. We had hoped Luca would be able to get on these rides, but babies need to be able to walk to go on the rides that are appropriate for them (and the poor guy isn’t quite there yet).

portaventura-world

Mexico

This area is colourful and full of energy, Mexico brings the spirit of Central America to life with its bright colours, lively music, and thrilling attractions.

Top rides:

  • Hurakan Condor – a fun freefall tower that gives you panoramic views before plunging down!
  • El Diablo – Tren de la Mina, a runaway mine train coaster perfect for kids and adults. Leo could get on this one with its 1.1m height requirement.

Dont miss: La Cantina is a great place to get lunch. We enjoyed the food there, it was reasonably priced, and they have shows at various times in the day.

portaventura-world

Far West

This area ties in beautifully with Colorado Creek Hotel, continuing the Wild West theme with wooden buildings, saloons, sheriffs, and the smell of BBQ in the air. It’s the area you will enter the park at if staying in one of the Far West Hotels.

Top rides:

  • Stampida – a wooden duelling rollercoaster. You need to be 1.2m to ride
  • Tomahawk – a junior version of Stampida for younger thrill seekers. Leo really enjoyed this one.
  • Silver River Flume and Grand Canyon Rapids – two water rides for cooling off and having a lot of laughs at however gets the most wet!
  • Crazy Barrels – A sickly spinny ride that Leo insisted on going on again and again. His favourite ride in the park. You need to be 1m to ride.

New addition: Uncharted: The Enigma of Penitence, an indoor dark coaster with great themeing.

Every area of PortAventura has its own atmosphere and character, and we loved spending time wandering through them all. There were plenty of shady spots, seating areas, and family-friendly facilities dotted throughout, so it was easy to take breaks and go at our own pace.

PortAventura-waterpark

Caribe Aquatic Park: PortAventuras Water Park

If you’re visiting in the warmer months, Caribe Water Park is the perfect way to cool off. It’s full of tropical vibes, palm trees, reggae music, and colourful waterslides – ideal for all ages and a great way to mix things up on your family trip. Note that you need a separate ticket to enter here.

Thrill slides:

  • King Khajuna – Europe’s highest free-fall slide at 31 metres. It’s fast, steep, and not for the faint of heart.
  • El Tifón and Ciclón Tropical are other high-adrenaline slides that teens and adventurous adults will love.

Family favourites:

  • El Río Loco – a lazy river to relax and play with younger kids.
  • Bahama Beach – a calm sunbathing area for parents to relax while little ones play.
  • Zona Indoor – perfect for rainy days, with an indoor splash area and slides for toddlers.

Extras: There are lockers, changing rooms, sunbeds, and places to grab snacks or lunch – you can easily spend a full day here without having to go back and forth.

ferrari-land

Ferrari Land

This is a separate park that opens later in the day, and then stays open until 10pm. We headed here at 4pm when it opened and we left around 7pm. We could have stayed longer, but the kids were getting tired and we wanted to get them fed and in bed! When you stay onsite, you get one ticket each to visit this park.

The park is a dream for car lovers and thrill seekers. Inspired by Italian design and the legacy of Ferrari, the whole area is polished, high-energy, and packed with racing-inspired attractions.

Top ride: Red Force – the tallest and fastest rollercoaster in Europe. It launches riders to 180 km/h in just 5 seconds and towers a jaw-dropping 112 metres into the air. It’s a must for adrenaline junkies.

For kids: There’s a whole kids’ area with a mini rollercoaster and other smaller rides. Leo enjoyed this section.

Other highlights:

  • Flying Dreams – a family-friendly flight simulator across global Ferrari landmarks.
  • Pit Stop Record – where you can practice your Formula 1 pit crew skills.
  • The Italian-themed plaza is stunning, with cafés, gelato and a replica of Rome’s Colosseum.

Vibe: Sleek, exciting, and very different from the rest of the resort – great for a half-day visit. Consider doing the waterpark in the morning and heading here in the late afternoon.

Fun things for shorter kids (1.1m +)

My son is 6 years old and currently around 1.15cm – this usually means he can get on a fair few thrilling rides at theme parks. Below is a list of my sons favourite attractions that he was able to ride.

  • Crazy Barrels – spinny, nauseous fun. The queue was this was never too long and he went on it a lot…
  • Silver River Flume – probably the best log flume we’ve been on. A variety of drops, lots of laughs and we got VERY wet!
  • Wild Buffalos – basically dodgems.
  • Tomahawk – a small wooden rollercoaster
  • Cobra Imperial – another spinning ride – why do kids love these so much?!
  • Mine train Rollercoaster – fun ride with a few different drops
  • Junior red force – a mini coaster in Ferrari Land
  • Flying Dreams in Ferrari Land.
  • He LOVED the play area in the sesame street area

These weren’t the only rides he went on, but these were the ones he really enjoyed.

portaventura-world

Fun things for babies and toddlers

It’s worth knowing that if your baby can’t walk, there isn’t an awful lot for them to do (and tbh at that stage they probably don’t care either!) Assuming your baby can walk, here is a list of some fun rides they can enjoy:

  • Carousel
  • Kiddie Balloons, a flying balloon ride.
  • Kiddie Dragons
  • Elmo Ride
  • Armadillos
  • Canoes
  • Waikiki – a spinning swing ride
  • Train ride – this goes around the park and Luca LOVED it.

Tips & Final Thoughts

We stayed at the park in June for 3 nights over a weekend. We arrived early and left late, meaning we actually had 5 days to enjoy the park. This felt like the perfect amount of time to see everything without needing to rush.

Travel Off-Peak if You Can

If your schedule allows, visiting outside of the school holidays or mid-week can make a huge difference. The parks are quieter, queues are shorter, and you’ll have more space to explore at your own pace. It also tends to be slightly cooler, which is a bonus when you’re walking around all day. We went in the park on a Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday – is was very noticeably quieter on the weekdays.

Make the Most of Early Entry

Staying at Colorado Creek (or any of the on-site hotels) gives you early access to the park. Getting in 30 minutes before everyone else means you can tick off some of the more popular rides with minimal wait, and it sets a great tone for the day.

Check out the Express Passes

They are good value as far as theme park express passes go, great if you really don’t want to queue. They have a variety of passes covering different rides.

Pack the Essentials

A few simple things made our days easier:

  • Swimwear and towels – perfect for the water rides or an unplanned dip in one of the hotel pools.
  • Refillable water bottles – the resort is big on sustainability, with lots of water fountains dotted around.
  • Sun cream, hats, and a hand held fan – especially during the warmer months. My fan saved my sanity on many occasions!

Use Your Hotel as a Midday Retreat

One of the biggest advantages of staying on-site was being able to take a break when we needed it. By lunchtime, the sun is at its strongest and the parks are at their busiest – we’d often head back to the hotel for a swim, a nap, or just some downtime in the air conditioning before heading back out in the cooler afternoon.

Visit PortAventura World with MagicBreaks

Booking through MagicBreaks makes everything so easy – from the flight and transfer to the hotel, tickets, and access to all the parks. If you’re looking for a fun, flexible, and even eco-conscious family holiday, we honestly can’t recommend PortAventura World enough.

Check prices here

This was a PR trip with MagicBreaks. We have wanted to visit this theme park for years so it was the perfect collaboration. All opinions are our own.

Ksamil is a town on the Albanian Riviera and has had some very mixed reviews over the years, and I think a lot of that comes down to when you visit.

We absolutely loved our trip. It was incredibly affordable too - we paid £190 for six nights in an apartment that slept five! (This was in 2023) I’ve written a full blog post about the trip over on the website, where I’ve shared some great-value accommodation options and tips if you’re thinking about booking something similar.

Comment BLOG and I’ll send you the link along with some cheap flights and info on how to get there!

Expect things like:

🍻 £1.50 pints
🦐 Seafood dishes for under £10
☀️ Beautiful, crystal-clear beaches

We visited in May, when there were very few other people around. The town was just starting to open up for the season, the weather was lovely, and it felt relaxed and easy to enjoy.

June also seems like a great time to visit – a few more things open, but still without the peak summer crowds.

July and August appear to be a very different experience. The town is quite small, and it struggles to cope with the number of visitors in peak season. It can feel very crowded, and prices - particularly for things like sun loungers - can become very steep because of the demand.

So if Ksamil is on your list, timing really is everything!
