Is Menorca worth visiting?
Why visit Menorca?
Visiting Menorca should be on everyone’s bucket list. One of the beautiful Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea, this picturesque destination is often overshadowed by its livelier neighbours, Mallorca and Ibiza. But those who make the trip quickly realise Menorca offers something special: stunning natural beauty, fascinating history, and a relaxed, authentic culture that feels a world away from the party scene.
When people ask, “Is Menorca worth visiting?” our answer is always the same: absolutely.
The island’s beaches are a huge highlight. Despite being smaller than its neighbouring islands, Menorca actually has more beaches than Mallorca and Ibiza combined. From hidden coves to long stretches of soft sand and turquoise water, it’s a paradise for beach lovers.
If you’re wondering why you should visit Menorca, this guide is for you. We’ll explore what makes the island so special, including the best places to stay and the top things to do for an unforgettable yet budget-friendly trip.
Where to stay in Menorca
Mahon (Mao)
Mahón, the capital of Menorca, is a vibrant and historic hub with accommodation options to suit every budget. Located just a 10-minute drive from the airport, it’s a particularly convenient place to stay if you’re visiting the island for a shorter trip.
The city is best known for its spectacular natural harbour, one of the largest in the world. Along the waterfront you’ll find restaurants, cafés and bars where you can enjoy a relaxed meal while watching boats and cruise ships drift in and out of the bay.
Accommodation ranges from stylish boutique hotels and charming guesthouses to more luxurious resorts if your budget stretches that far. For better value, consider staying slightly outside the centre where prices tend to be lower while still keeping you close to the action.
Mahón is also the island’s main transport hub, making it an excellent base for exploring Menorca using public transport. While you’re in the area, it’s worth visiting nearby Es Castell, a charming village just outside the city. It offers a more laid-back, authentic atmosphere and is a great place to enjoy Menorca without the heavier tourist crowds or inflated prices.

Ciutadella
Located on the western coast of the island, around a 45-minute drive from the airport, Ciutadella is Menorca’s former capital and one of its most beautiful towns. Rich in history and full of character, it offers a very different feel to Mahón and, personally, I preferred it.
The old town is particularly charming, with cobbled streets, elegant architecture and picturesque squares filled with cafés and restaurants. It’s easy to spend hours simply wandering through the historic centre and soaking up the atmosphere.
Ciutadella is also famous for hosting the San Joan Festival each June, one of the island’s biggest and most spectacular celebrations. If you happen to visit during this time, it’s a fantastic opportunity to experience Menorca’s traditions and local culture.
With good public transport connections to many of the island’s best beaches, Ciutadella is also a great base if you’re planning to explore Menorca without hiring a car.
Fornells
If you’re looking for a quieter and more authentic experience, Fornells is an idyllic fishing village on the northern coast of Menorca, around a 30-minute drive from the airport. Set around a beautiful natural bay, the village is particularly popular for sailing, kayaking and other water sports.
Accommodation here tends to be smaller and more characterful, with family-run guesthouses, boutique hotels and apartments that give the area a relaxed, local feel.
Fornells is also famous for its food, especially seafood. Many of the island’s best seafood restaurants are found here, making it a fantastic place to enjoy long, leisurely meals overlooking the water. With its peaceful atmosphere and scenic setting, Fornells is perfect for travellers seeking a slower pace and a truly relaxing stay.
Cala Galdana
Cala Galdana, on the southern coast of Menorca, is often considered one of the island’s most beautiful beach resorts. Located around a 30-minute drive from the airport, it’s an easy and convenient base for a beach-focused holiday.
The resort is centred around a stunning horseshoe-shaped bay, with soft golden sand and calm, crystal-clear waters that are perfect for swimming. It’s also close to several of Menorca’s famous unspoilt “virgin” beaches, many of which can be reached by coastal walking trails.
Along the bay you’ll find a range of accommodation, from upscale resorts to family-friendly hotels and apartments, many offering sea views and direct access to the beach.
If your ideal holiday involves sunshine, swimming and long days by the sea, Cala Galdana is an excellent choice.

Punta Prima
Located on the south-eastern tip of the island, Punta Prima is a great option if you’re looking for budget-friendly accommodation. The resort offers a range of affordable hotels, apartments and guesthouses, and it’s conveniently located just a 20-minute drive from the airport.
The main draw here is the beautiful sandy beach, with shallow, crystal-clear water that’s perfect for swimming, paddling and relaxing in the sun. It’s an easy, free way to spend your days and ideal for families travelling with young children.
When we first drove down into Punta Prima, we were genuinely surprised by how white the sand was. The water is calm and incredibly clear, making it one of the best spots on the island for little ones.
From Punta Prima, you can also take a small tourist train to nearby Binibèquer, a picturesque coastal village famous for its whitewashed houses and winding streets. Think Santorini, but on a much smaller and quieter scale, and you won’t be far off.
Cala’n Bosch
Located around an hour’s drive from the airport, Cala’n Bosch is one of the most popular resorts in Menorca. Purpose-built as a tourist destination, it’s a convenient and easy place to stay, with plenty of bars, restaurants and activities all within walking distance.
The resort is centred around a large marina, which creates a lively yet relaxed atmosphere, especially in the evenings when the waterfront restaurants fill with visitors enjoying dinner by the water.
Accommodation here is generally well priced, with a wide range of hotels and apartments to suit different budgets. The variety of restaurants and cafés also means you can easily find somewhere to eat without spending a fortune.
There’s a lovely sandy beach just a short walk from the marina, making it easy to enjoy the sea without needing to travel far. The charming city of Ciutadella is also close by, making it a perfect spot for an evening trip or a relaxed day exploring the historic streets.

When to Visit Menorca
The best time to visit Menorca really depends on the type of trip you’re hoping for. The island has something to offer throughout the year, although prices naturally peak during the summer months of July and August.
I want to sunbathe and swim in the sea
If your main goal is beach time, visiting between May and September is ideal. The hottest weather arrives in July and August, when the island is at its busiest.
We visited in August and honestly couldn’t believe how busy some of the beaches were. If you wanted to visit the beautiful virgin beaches along the south coast, you needed to be in the car parks before 7:30am or they would already be full. A level of tourist madness I had never experienced before.
For many people, May, June or September can be the perfect compromise. You’ll still get plenty of sunshine and warm sea temperatures, but with fewer crowds and often cheaper accommodation.
I want to hike and experience nature
Spring is a wonderful time to visit Menorca if you enjoy hiking and being outdoors. The weather is cooler, the crowds are minimal, and the island’s wildflowers are in bloom.
This is the perfect time to explore the island’s coastal walking trails and natural landscapes. Just keep in mind that many beach resorts close outside the main summer season, so if you’re visiting in early spring it’s usually best to stay in one of the larger towns or cities.
I want to do a bit of everything
Autumn is a brilliant time to visit if you want a mixture of beach time, sightseeing and exploring. Temperatures remain very pleasant, with average highs of around 23°C in October.
You’re more likely to experience the occasional overcast day compared to the height of summer, but that actually makes exploring much more enjoyable. You might have one day perfect for the beach and another ideal for wandering through towns or hiking along the coast.
We attempted some of the coastal hiking trails between beaches during our August trip and quickly realised it was far too hot. Walking around a city in 38°C heat is not nearly as glamorous as it sounds.
I want a relaxing city break
Winter can actually be a fantastic time to visit Menorca if you’re looking for a quiet escape. Prices drop significantly during the low season, making it possible to find some great deals.
Mahón is a particularly good base for a short winter getaway. Menorca’s winters are mild compared with much of Europe, with December highs averaging around 15°C. The city also hosts a Christmas market and festive lights, giving it a lovely seasonal atmosphere.
One of our favourite winter travel ideas is having a picnic on an empty beach. Wrap up warm, grab some snacks from the supermarket, and enjoy a peaceful stretch of coastline that would be packed with visitors during the summer. It’s a simple experience, but one that feels surprisingly magical.
What to do in Menorca
Visit the Beaches
Menorca boasts some of the most pristine and beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean. You will struggle to find whiter sands and more turquoise water! There are numerous virgin beaches which are pretty untouched by mass tourism. I say this, in the summer months they are VERY touched by tourists! We had to get to the car park at 7:30am to secure a spot at one of the beaches! But most are set away from the car parks, with minimal facilities, giving that isolated paradise vibe.
Our favourite virgin beach was Cala Turqueta, the middle of 5 virgin beaches connected by coastal hiking trails. These beaches spanning from west to east are Son Saura, Cala des Talaier, Cala Turqueta, Macarelleta and Cala Macarella. You can park at Son Saura, Cala Turqueta or Cala Macarella. There are cafe facilities by the car parks at Turqueta and Macarella. If you want to combine some beautiful hiking trails with a cool down in the sea, a day exploring this area will be perfect.
Explore Historic Sites
Menorca is steeped in history, with a rich assortment of archaeological sites and historical landmarks. The Talaiotic period left behind a legacy of pre historic stone monuments, including the Naveta des Tudons and Torre d’en Galmés. Menorca has an impressive 1500 megalithic sights, perfect for anyone with an interest in ancient civilisations. Ciutadella and Mahon are also home to charming old towns with historic churches, fortresses, and palaces.
Hike the Cami de Cavalls
The Cami de Cavalls is a 185km coastal trail that goes around the entire island, providing breathtaking views of Menorca’s coastline. It originated in 1330 when the king insisted everyone have an armed horse ready to defend the island! A path going around the entire island made it easy to keep watch.
Whether you’re an avid hiker or are just looking for a leisurely stroll, this trail offers a unique perspective of the island’s beauty.
Sample Menorcan Cuisine
The typical food in Menorca is a delicious blend of Mediterranean flavours, showcasing fresh seafood, locally sourced ingredients, and traditional recipes. The most famous Menorcan dish is lobster stew (caldereta de langosta). They use the local spiny lobster cooked in a tomato, onion and garlic sauce. Absolutely delicious and available across the island.
Don’t miss out on trying Mahon cheese too, a white cheese made from cows milk with a salty edge to it due to the sea salt on the grass the cows eat! If you have a sweet tooth, ensaimadas are a delicious traditional sweet pastry enjoyed across the island.
Visit Lithica
We stumbled upon this one by accident but it’s a really unique and fun way to spend an hour or two. This former sandstone quarry has been transformed into something beautiful. Now home to a huge maze and gardens that you can walk around and explore. Leo absolutely loved the maze and running around the gardens. It is only €7 for adults and is free for under 12’s, so a great budget friendly and unique activity to add to your trip. You can buy tickets here.

Visit Illa del Rei (a budget friendly boat trip)
Leo loves a boat ride, so this fulfilled his wishes and meant we got to see somewhere interesting at the same time. From Mahon you can take a boat across to ‘Hospital Island’ for just €10 return (Leo was free), a great value way to spend a few hours. It takes around 15 minutes to get to the island. You can sit at the top of the boat enjoying the sun and wonderful views.
Once on the island there are a variety of art galleries with some free activities for little ones. There is also a lovely place to get an al fresco lunch or some drinks. The old hospital here was constructed in 1711 by the British who controlled Menorca for most of the 18th Century. You can walk around and explore this unique building.
The boat that takes you there is a big yellow catamaran – you can learn more about this here. The boats left for the island on the hour, and returned back from the island at half passed the hour. We stayed for an hour and a half. When you get back to Mahon, keep an eye out for a lovely little playground right by where you will depart the boat.

Where Did We Stay?
A lot of you like to know exactly what we did, so here’s the honest breakdown. We stayed in Santo Tomás, a quiet resort town on the south coast of the island. Would we recommend it? Maybe.
Accommodation
Our accommodation choice was based almost entirely on budget. Visiting in August and planning to explore the island by car meant the exact location mattered less than getting the best possible price.
We managed to get our flights and a week’s accommodation for £1,300 for the three of us, which is a bargain for an August stay on such a popular island. (This trip was found using our Start Your Journey website feature!)
We stayed at Vistamar Apartments, which is a great budget-friendly option for families. Our apartment had a lovely balcony overlooking the sea and a kitchen, which meant we saved a lot of money by not eating out every night.
One downside was that our room didn’t have air conditioning. It’s worth noting that many of the apartments do, though, so it seems to be a bit of luck which one you’re allocated.
The receptionist told us we should have messaged ahead to mention we were travelling with a young child and would prefer an air-conditioned room if one was available. Definitely something to do if you’re planning to stay here. Thankfully they provided several fans, which kept us comfortable enough.
There’s also a pool, an on-site restaurant, and the hotel is just steps from the beach. Santo Tomás itself isn’t the liveliest resort and restaurant options are limited, but it works well as a relaxed base if you’re planning to explore the island or simply want a quiet week by the sea.
Getting Around
For our 7-night stay we chose to hire a car, which I would highly recommend if you want to see more of the island.
Having a car means you can travel on your own schedule rather than relying on public transport. It also makes things much easier with children, especially when tiredness inevitably appears halfway through the day. You can compare car hire prices here.
We used a company called OK Mobility, which came up as the cheapest option for our dates. At just £250 for seven days in August, we were happy to take a chance on a company we hadn’t used before. Overall, the experience was good. They pick you up directly from the airport and take you to their air-conditioned office to complete the paperwork and collect your car.
I always recommend using a comparison website when booking car hire rather than going straight to one company. The best value provider can change depending on the dates and destination.
So… Is Menorca Worth Visiting?
If you’ve read this far, you probably already know our answer.
Menorca is one of those places that quietly surprises you. The beaches are some of the most beautiful in Europe, the towns are charming, and the pace of life feels wonderfully relaxed compared to some of the other Balearic Islands.
Yes, it gets busy in peak summer. But if you explore a little beyond the main resorts, you’ll find hidden coves, scenic coastal trails and some truly unforgettable views.
For families especially, it’s a fantastic destination. Safe beaches, great food, beautiful scenery and plenty of opportunities for adventure.
And who knows. You might end up falling for Menorca just like we did.

Ksamil is a town on the Albanian Riviera and has had some very mixed reviews over the years, and I think a lot of that comes down to when you visit.
We absolutely loved our trip. It was incredibly affordable too - we paid £190 for six nights in an apartment that slept five! (This was in 2023) I’ve written a full blog post about the trip over on the website, where I’ve shared some great-value accommodation options and tips if you’re thinking about booking something similar.
Comment BLOG and I’ll send you the link along with some cheap flights and info on how to get there!
Expect things like:
🍻 £1.50 pints
🦐 Seafood dishes for under £10
☀️ Beautiful, crystal-clear beaches
We visited in May, when there were very few other people around. The town was just starting to open up for the season, the weather was lovely, and it felt relaxed and easy to enjoy.
June also seems like a great time to visit – a few more things open, but still without the peak summer crowds.
July and August appear to be a very different experience. The town is quite small, and it struggles to cope with the number of visitors in peak season. It can feel very crowded, and prices - particularly for things like sun loungers - can become very steep because of the demand.
So if Ksamil is on your list, timing really is everything!
