Things to do in Northumberland – A Complete Guide 2025

Thinking about a family trip to Northumberland? Whether you’ve got a long weekend or a full staycation in mind, you’re not going to be short of things to do. In fact, the only problem you might have is fitting it all in. Love history? You’ll be tripping over castles, forts and Hadrian’s Wall itself. Prefer the great outdoors? Take your pick from coastal paths, riverside strolls and the wide-open Cheviot hills. Water babies aren’t left out either – from surfing lessons in Tynemouth to paddleboarding on peaceful rivers, there’s plenty to dive into. And that’s before we even get started on all the brilliant family attractions dotted across the county.

So, where do you begin? Let’s take a look at some of the best things to do in Northumberland.

Castles in Northumberland

Northumberland has more than 70 castles, but Alnwick Castle is the star attraction. Famous for appearing in the Harry Potter films, it’s still home to the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland. Families can enjoy a morning history tour and an afternoon broomstick lesson, and a day ticket gives you unlimited entry for a full year.

Next door, Alnwick Garden is perfect for little explorers. With willow arches, fountains, and wide lawns, it’s ideal for running around, spotting wildlife, or following seasonal activity trails. Picnics are welcome, or you can grab lunch at the Garden Café.

The magical Lilidorei play village is also in the garden and a must for children aged 11 and under. It features the world’s largest wooden play structure with towers, rope bridges, tube slides and tunnels. Kids will love the daily activities and the Christmas-loving invisible creatures that make the village feel truly magical. Tickets must be booked in advance and can be combined with garden entry.

Other castles worth visiting include Bamburgh Castle, with its dramatic seaside setting, Lindisfarne Castle on Holy Island, and Chillingham Castle, which offers spooky overnight stays for the brave.

Visit Northumberland’s Beautiful Coastline

Northumberland’s coastline is simply stunning. From the golden sands of Tynemouth in the south to Spittal Beach near Berwick-upon-Tweed in the north, you’ll find miles of sandy beaches and rolling dunes to explore.

Four of the beaches here have earned the prestigious Blue Flag award: King Edward’s Bay (Tynemouth), Tynemouth Longsands, Whitley Bay, and Blyth South Beach. They’re clean, safe and perfect for a family day out.

If you fancy combining a castle adventure with your beach trip, you’re in luck. Bamburgh Castle, Dunstanburgh Castle and Warkworth Castle all sit right by the sea, making it easy to mix sandcastles with real ones.

For something a little different, head to Druridge Bay. Here you’ll find not just a beautiful stretch of beach, but also a country park with a lake, a large play area and a family-friendly café. The lake is great for watersports like windsurfing and kayaking, and if you plan ahead you can even book a pitch and stay overnight.

When it comes to family holidays, you’ll find plenty of places to stay along the coast, including Haven and Parkdean holiday parks. Scroll down and use the region buttons below to start planning your perfect seaside break.

Go Back in Time with a Visit to Hadrian’s Wall

Did you know Northumberland is home to part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site? Stretching 73 miles from coast to coast, Hadrian’s Wall is one of the most famous Roman landmarks in the world, and large sections of it can still be explored right here. Follow the Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail and you’ll discover crumbling forts, watchtowers and even the remains of Roman towns.

Some of the most family-friendly stops include:

  • Vindolanda – an active archaeological site where you can watch real digs taking place and see fascinating Roman artefacts (including writing tablets) in the museum.

  • Housesteads Roman Fort – one of the best-preserved forts along the Wall, complete with ancient barracks, granaries and a commanding hillside view.

  • Chesters Roman Fort – set by the River Tyne, this site is perfect for a picnic after exploring the bathhouse and museum.

  • Corbridge Roman Town – once a bustling supply base, it gives a real sense of how Romans lived day to day.

  • Birdoswald Roman Fort – brilliant for families, with interactive displays and long stretches of the Wall to walk along.

If you’d like a full museum experience, head east to Segedunum Roman Fort in Wallsend or Arbeia South Shields Roman Fort, where reconstructed buildings and hands-on exhibits bring the Roman world to life.

Keep an eye out for special family events during school holidays, from costumed re-enactments to kids’ activity trails, which make stepping back in time even more exciting

Country Parks in Northumberland

Northumberland has some brilliant country parks that are ideal for family adventures. Alongside Druridge Bay Country Park (mentioned in the Beaches section), three other favourites are Plessey Woods, Bolam Lake, and the vast Kielder Forest.

Plessey Woods Country Park

Close to Bedlington and Cramlington, Plessey Woods has over 100 acres of woodland just waiting to be explored. Kids can follow winding trails, hunt for quirky woodland sculptures and splash about in the shallow streams. The refurbished play area by the visitor centre has plenty to keep toddlers, tweens and even older kids entertained. It’s also a great spot for den-building and nature-spotting, so don’t forget your wellies. There are toilets on site, and while the café and visitor centre are being refurbished until late 2025, the park is still a brilliant place for a full family day out.

Bolam Lake Country Park

Bolam Lake may not have a playground, but it makes up for it with a gorgeous lakeside walk and plenty of space to run around. The mile-long circular path is buggy and wheelchair friendly, and little ones will love feeding the ducks or looking out for swans and squirrels along the way. There are picnic benches dotted around and wide grassy areas that are perfect for ball games or a blanket lunch. The visitor centre and café are open Wednesday to Sunday, with toilets available daily.

Both parks are ideal for letting kids stretch their legs, burn off energy and connect with nature, whether that means clambering over logs, spotting wildlife or simply enjoying a family picnic in the fresh Northumberland air.

Kielder Forest

For a bigger adventure, head to Kielder, the largest forest in England and home to the biggest man-made lake in northern Europe. Families can enjoy miles of walking and cycling trails, spot red squirrels and osprey, or try watersports on the lake. There are play areas, picnic spots and plenty of room for little explorers to run free. Kielder Castle Visitor Centre often has family activities, and older kids will love a visit to Kielder Observatory, where you can experience stargazing in Europe’s largest Dark Sky Park. With lodges and cabins nearby, it’s a fantastic place for a full weekend of outdoor fun.

All three parks are perfect for letting kids stretch their legs, discover nature and enjoy the fresh Northumberland air, whether that means clambering over logs, spotting wildlife or simply enjoying a picnic together.

Towns with Playgrounds in Northumberland

Exploring Northumberland’s towns is a great way to spend the day, and if you’re visiting with kids, it always helps to know where the best parks and play areas are. Here are a few favourites where you can mix shopping, sightseeing and playtime.

Hexham
Hexham is a lovely market town with a mix of high street shops and independents to browse. History fans will enjoy Hexham Abbey (free to enter) and Hexham Old Gaol, England’s first purpose-built prison. For families, the best spot is Tyne Green Park on the edge of town. It has a large enclosed playground, riverside walks and plenty of space for a picnic. Perfect for letting the kids burn off energy before or after exploring the town.

Morpeth
Another pretty shopping town is Morpeth, which also has the brilliant Carlisle Park. Here you’ll find a play area for younger children, a separate one for older kids, and even a paddling pool that’s open in summer – always a big hit on hot days. The park sits right on the river, and rowing boats are available to hire if you fancy a little adventure on the water. If the weather isn’t on your side, the brand-new leisure centre has a soft play and café to keep everyone happy.

Other Parks and Playgrounds

  • Ridley Park, Blyth: two big enclosed playgrounds plus a water play area in summer. There’s also a café and toilets on site.

  • Paddlers Park, Amble: a seaside playground with lovely sea views.

  • Eastwoods Park, Prudhoe: a well-equipped play area along with football pitches.

  • Astley Park, Seaton Delaval: play areas, gardens, a bowling green and tennis courts.

Whether it’s riverside paddling, seaside swings or just a spot for a picnic and a run around, these playgrounds make exploring Northumberland’s towns much more family-friendly.

Adventure, Outdoor and Wildlife Activities

Northumberland is an outdoor playground for families, with adventures to suit every age and energy level.

Go Ape Kielder is a must for older kids and teens, offering treetop obstacle courses, rope bridges, and thrilling zip lines. For younger children or those who prefer to keep their feet on the ground, there are beginner courses and adventure trails designed just for little explorers.

Cycling is another great way to explore the region. Families can take gentle rides along the Northumberland Coast Cycle Route, follow woodland paths in Kielder Forest, or enjoy traffic-free trails in country parks such as Plessey Woods. Bike hire is available at many locations, making it easy to plan a family-friendly day out without bringing your own bikes.

Water-based adventures are plentiful. Try kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding on Kielder Water, go windsurfing at coastal lakes, or take a family-friendly boat trip along the rivers. Many of these activities are guided, so beginners are welcome, and children can safely join in the fun.

Hiking and walking are perfect for all ages. Sections of the Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail are short enough for little legs, with Roman forts and towers to explore along the way. For younger children or families looking for easier routes, country parks like Bolam Lake, Druridge Bay, and the Cheviot Hills provide scenic walks with open spaces for running and playing.

Wildlife spotting adds another layer of excitement. Take a trip to the Farne Islands to see puffins, seals, and seabirds up close, or head to Kielder Forest to spot red squirrels, deer, and ospreys. Guided walks and seasonal activities often help children learn about the animals and their habitats. Other great spots include Belsay Hall & Gardens, where deer roam freely, and coastal reserves like Druridge Bay, which are perfect for birdwatching. Even a simple walk in a country park can turn into a mini wildlife adventure as children spot ducks, swans, and other small creatures along the way.

Whether it’s climbing treetops, cycling through forests, paddling on a lake, or spotting wildlife, Northumberland offers endless opportunities for families to stay active, explore nature, and create unforgettable memories together.

Top Family Attractions in Northumberland

Northumberland isn’t just about castles, beaches, and countryside – there are plenty of attractions designed specifically to keep kids entertained and happy. Here are some of the top spots for families:

Whitehouse Farm – This hands-on farm park is a favourite with little ones. Children can meet farm animals, enjoy indoor and outdoor play areas, take part in seasonal activities, and explore the tractor rides and adventure trails. It’s perfect for a day where kids can get close to animals and burn off some energy.

Farne Islands Boat Trips – For slightly older children, a trip to the Farne Islands is unforgettable. See puffins, seals, and seabirds up close, and learn about local wildlife from knowledgeable guides. Many tours are short enough to suit families with younger children.

Beamish Museum – Just over the border in County Durham but very close to Northumberland, Beamish is an open-air museum where kids can step back in time. Ride trams, explore historic buildings, and take part in hands-on demonstrations. It’s a hit for history-loving families.

This is a great family holiday option. There are a variety of themed onsite hotels at Portaventura and also peripheral hotels that often include tickets.

Comment “Spain” and I’ll send you a DM with some links. For a lower budget option, look at peripheral hotels. We loved the onsite Colorado creek but it is on the more expensive side of how you can visit.

Links we send are affiliate links. We aren’t asked to post or promote particular places.

The first thing we noticed online is how many “regulars” this place seems to have. People don’t just go once, they return year on year. The best sign of a great place. And after visiting we can see why. Although it is expensive, you get what you pay for. The ease of everything already being covered means the holiday feels like a holiday. We didn’t have to say no to the kids when they wanted to do an activity, they could do whatever they wanted.

To help you with the cost I’ve got you a discount code for £100 off per person! Which is a huge saving for a family. Comment “potters” and I’ll send you the code and more info. You need to book this month for either May bank hol, May half term, or the summer hols.

We were invited for a PR visit but had no pressure to post. I always tell brands that we won’t promote something if we don’t think it’s fab 🫶🏻❤️
