Al Raha Beach Resort – An Honest Family Review

Why Abu Dhabi is such a good choice for families

Abu Dhabi is one of our favourite family winter destinations with its year-round sunshine, spotless streets, ridiculously good infrastructure and some genuinely brilliant family attractions. It’s clean, safe, easy to get around, and very clearly designed with families in mind.

You’ve got world-class theme parks on Yas Island, huge shopping malls with soft play areas everywhere, beaches, and cultural spots like the Grand Mosque that are genuinely worth visiting. It’s also a really manageable size compared to somewhere like Dubai, so you’re not spending your entire holiday stuck in taxis or on the metro.

For UK families especially, it’s an easy mid to long-haul option that still feels like a proper holiday upgrade.

Why we chose Al Raha Beach Resort

We chose Al Raha Beach Resort for a few practical reasons:

  • It was one of the most budget-friendly 5-star options we could find in Abu Dhabi on a half board basis
  • It has a dedicated splash pool with little slides – surprisingly rare in Abu Dhabi hotels
  • It’s right on the beach, so you can switch between pool and sea depending on mood (or toddler tolerance)
  • The Yas Island Express shuttle stops here, meaning easy, free transfers to and from Yas Waterworld, Warner Bros World, Ferrari World, SeaWorld and Yas Mall.

Basically: good value, child-friendly, and logistically easy. Those three things win every time when you’re travelling with kids.

First impressions & location

Al Raha beach resort is about 10–15 minutes from the airport and around 15-20 minutes from Yas Island, which is really convenient when you’ve got little kids. We booked our package holiday with Etihad Holidays and they arranged a private transfer for us. On arrival there was a driver waiting for us with our names on a board. We didn’t have any waiting around, it was very quick and easy getting through the airport and to the hotel.

The hotel isn’t in the middle of the city like some of the more famous hotels, but honestly… with kids, that’s a good thing. It’s quiet, relaxed, and everything you need is either on site or a short taxi / shuttle ride away.

The hotel itself has a more traditional, grand Arabian style rather than the ultra-modern resorts popping up elsewhere in Abu Dhabi. Think marble floors, high ceilings, big open spaces. Slightly older in style, but still very well kept.

Al Raha Beach Resort | Rooms

We initially booked a superior room which seemed more than big enough for our family of four, but we were very kindly upgraded to a Gulf Junior Suite! These suites are huge, and the ceiling height is something else. I have never stayed somewhere with such high ceilings!

All of the rooms at this hotel are generous in size, with large beds and space for a cot without it feeling like a game of Tetris. Most rooms have a balcony, many with sea views, which is always a nice bonus. The most basic room which we initially booked was 55 square meters. The Gulf Junior Suites is a huge 65 square metres!

Décor-wise, it’s not the most modern hotel in Abu Dhabi, but it’s clean, comfortable, and everything works – which, frankly, is what you care about at the end of a long day with kids.

Al Raha Beach Resort | Pools

This is where Al Raha really works for families. Having a pool area that the kids are excited about is a must for us. We would often spend the morning at the pool before doing an activity in the afternoon.

The splash pool

The children’s splash pool has a few small slides and was one of the main reasons we booked this particular hotel.

It’s ideal for toddlers and younger kids – not too big, not too intimidating, but enough to keep them entertained for hours. Luca (1) loved the water play, and Leo (6) still enjoyed the slides and splashing around. We chose sun beds in front of the splash pool which were also close to the beach. We could easily move between the two and the boys didn’t get bored.

Main pools

As well as the shallow splash pool, there is a large family pool that is heated. Not just ‘tepid’ heated, it actually felt warm! There is also a pool bar that you can sit at and aqua aerobics (if you like that sort of thing!). Every day you can get fresh towels and sun beds were always available. We visited in February during Ramadan and it was really quiet. We read some reviews saying it can get really busy at the pool, but this wasn’t our experience at this time of year.

The beach

The hotel has its own private beach, which is clean, well-maintained and very easy to access from the pool area. There are plenty of sun beds without it feeling crowded. There are life guards by both pools and on the beach, meaning you have peace of mind. There was a box with some sand toys which meant we didn’t need to buy anything.

Food & half board – Was it worth it?

We stayed half board, which for us was 100% the right decision. You could choose whether to have either lunch or dinner each day as well as your breakfast. We were out most days so it worked out best for us to have breakfast and dinner. If you fancied a day around the pool, you could have lunch at the buffet and then go out for your dinner.

One day we ordered takeaway for lunch, there are lots of apps to do this and it came really quickly (we ordered Popeyes and Pizza on an app called Talabat).

Meals are served buffet-style, with a wide variety of options. We were staying during Ramadan and each evening we got to enjoy a lovely Iftar out by the pool. The buffet had:

  • international dishes
  • kid-friendly basics (fresh pasta station, pizza, etc.)
  • salads, grilled meats, fish, hummus, bread
  • Lots of yummy desserts including some great ice cream.

Is it the most gourmet food in Abu Dhabi? No.
Is it good, tasty, and easy with kids? Yes.

And when you’re travelling with children, ease wins.

The biggest benefit of half board for us was:
  • Not constantly thinking about where to eat
  • Our picky eating eldest being able to eat pasta every day, while we could eat more interesting Arabian options!
  • Not spending a fortune on every single meal
  • It made budgeting for the trip easier knowing two meals were covered each day.
  • We could still go out for lunch or the occasional dinner elsewhere if we wanted.

There is an a la carte restaurant you can eat at for a small additional cost, we didn’t do this however as the buffet works much better for our family.

Note that alcoholic and soft drinks aren’t included with your meal. You are given water at meal times and anything else needs to be paid for. If you think you will drink a lot of alcohol and will spend a lot of time at the resort, consider staying all inclusive. (A beer was £9 to give you an idea of prices!) We ended up ordering a bottle of Vodka (on a delivery app) and having a few drinks in our room so that we didn’t need to pay for too many expensive drinks! There is a mall right next door where we picked up soft drinks and snacks.

Getting to Yas Island Theme Parks

One of the most underrated perks of Al Raha Beach Resort is that the Yas Island Express shuttle stops at the hotel. The hotel also has its own shuttle that visits the Grand Mosque each day too.

The Yas Express means you can get to:

  • Yas Waterworld
  • Warner Bros World
  • Ferrari World
  • SeaWorld
  • Yas Mall

…without needing taxis every time.

That said, we usually opted for a taxi to the theme parks as it was the most convenient option for our family. The Yas Express arrived at the hotel at 10:00, which was the same time the parks opened. As we were visiting during Ramadan, when the parks close earlier, we wanted to arrive right at opening to make the most of the day. Taxis were very reasonably priced and easily arranged through the hotel. For our group of six, a large taxi cost around 28 AED (about £6). The Yas Express return service left the parks at around 17:20, so it still provided a really easy way to get back to the hotel.

Yas Island Park Tickets

I have written separate posts with more details about Yas Island, Yas Waterworld and Warner Bros world. Tickets are included with some Yas Island hotels. Alternatively, you can buy multi day tickets (which is what we did). We bought them on Get Your Guide and went for the three park ticket. It is valid for 6 days from the first day of use, which worked well for us. You get an Abu Dhabi pass when travelling with Etihad, which gives up to 15% off attraction tickets (plus some free entry tickets to places like the national history museum). The tickets ended up being the same price on Get your Guide so we bought them on there.

A 1-day, 2-park ticket currently costs £88. A 2-park ticket to use across separate days is £96, a 3-park ticket is £115, and a 4-park ticket is £136. If you have the time, it offers much better value to spread the parks over multiple days. Trying to visit two parks in a single day would be a big ask, especially with children.

Yas Waterworld was our favourite of the parks we visited.

What we loved about Al Raha Beach Resort

  • Great value for a 5-star hotel. We paid £3000 for 8 nights half board for our family of 4. We used our Etihad Holidays discount code (TRAVELMUMS) which you can also redeem here. It currently gets you £125 off your holiday. We travelled partially in February half term and booked last minute (Leo missed 3 days of school on our return).
  • The half board option made budgeting easy. All Inclusive is also available, which isn’t the case at a lot of hotels.
  • Splash park for younger kids (rare in Abu Dhabi hotels)
  • Pool was a great temperature
  • Beach and pool in one place
  • Playground outside the kids club open to use in the evening.
  • Spacious family rooms
  • Easy access to Yas Island via shuttle
  • Shuttle to the Grand Mosque
  • Relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere

Things to be aware of

Because no hotel is perfect:

  • It’s not the newest or most modern hotel in Abu Dhabi
  • It’s in a quiet area, so you won’t have lots of restaurants within walking distance. (but there is a mall next door and great food delivery apps)
  • Food is good but not ultra luxury dining
  • No specific evening entertainment for the kids, however this isn’t common in Abu Dhabi at any if the hotels.
  • The kids club was very quiet during our stay so it’s difficult to comment on what it would be like during busier periods. We did like that we could use the space with our kids to play (lots of kids clubs dont allow adults in). There is a separate space for over 4’s and a gaming space for over 8’s, with a big play room for younger children. There is a cinema style room playing cartoons for kids who prefer some calm.
  • Alcohol is expensive. Consider all inclusive or picking up a bottle of something at duty free if you want a drink.

None of these were deal-breakers for us, but worth knowing so expectations are realistic.

Al Raha Beach Resort Final verdict – Would we recommend it?

Yes – especially for families looking for a more affordable 5-star stay in Abu Dhabi without sacrificing comfort or facilities.

If you want:

  • a hotel that’s easy with kids
  • good value
  • and a mix of pool, beach and theme parks

Al Raha Beach Resort is a really solid choice.

It might not be the flashiest hotel in Abu Dhabi, but when you’re travelling with kids, the reality is you don’t need flashy – you need easy, comfortable, and enjoyable.

And this ticks those boxes.

We visited this hotel for a family holiday. It was not sponsored in any way.

We have just visited Efteling in the Netherlands for the FIFTH time, but for the first time in winter 😍 It is such a magical place anyway, but there is something VERY special about it in winter. It’s one of our favourite places to visit as a family.

We were staying at their Grand Hotel for a PR visit and the hotel is INCREDIBLE. It’s their 5* luxury offering, putting you right in the centre of the park. I’ll be posting a hotel tour tomorrow and a blog post this week.

How I wish I lived in the woods with some other free spirited families - we could all educate our kids together, let them run wild and free. What do you do when you know you aren’t quite where you want to be in life, but the dream seems so impossible? Anyone want to join my commune? 🙃🫶🏻

Would you take your 4 year old to Glastonbury festival?! Here’s a sneak peek of what we got up to today 🤩

The main sets don’t start until tomorrow (Friday) so we spent today doing whatever Leo wanted to do! There is so much here for kids. We went to the seaside pier, played in both kidz fields, did crafts, spent a few hours at the circus and had a fantastic day! Everything is included in your ticket price. Leo is about to go to bed with his Nan and we’re going to go out out 👀🙌🏻🍻

I will update my story tomorrow with more details, where we ate, what we spent etc!
