Autism Friendly UK Holidays | Tips and Advice
Autism Friendly UK Holidays – Why They Matter To Us
As a parent of a neurodiverse child, I know how overwhelming it can feel to plan a holiday. From trying to avoid sensory overload to worrying about how new places will be received, it can feel easier to stay home. But with time, and a fair bit of trial and error, I’ve found that holidays can work. The key? Planning for your family’s needs without trying to fit into someone else’s version of “holiday fun.” Here are some tips that have helped us enjoy autism friendly UK holidays as a neurodiverse family – I hope they help you too.
Autism Friendly UK Holidays – Not Always Obvious
Not Every Place Has an “Autism-Friendly” Label – And That’s Okay
It’s worth remembering that not every destination will advertise itself as autism-friendly, but that doesn’t mean it won’t work well for your family. In fact, some of our best autism friendly UK holidays have been in places that simply offered the right kind of atmosphere, even without any formal “status.”
Here’s what we look for when choosing a place that feels autism-friendly to us:
- Quiet locations away from crowds
- Low-pressure, low-demand environments
- Calm indoor and outdoor spaces
- Flexible dining options (like the ability to cook or eat at off-peak times)
Trust your instincts – you know what works best for your family. Sometimes, a simple, peaceful spot with kind staff is all you need.
Autism Friendly UK Holidays – Alternative Places to Stay
When we first started taking breaks, I assumed hotels were the only option and quickly found they rarely suited us. We’ve since had wonderful holidays in unexpected places: glamping pods, quiet hostels, camping with friends.
YHA hostels, have been a great option for us. Many offer private family rooms, basic kitchen facilities, and are based in peaceful, rural locations.

It can help to plan a staycation around attractions that will work well for your family. We love Chester Zoo, with its wide-spread park, interactive experiences, great parks. Go Self-Catering for Flexibility and Familiarity
Self-catering has become our go-to for autism friendly UK holidays . It lets us stick to our child’s eating habits, avoid busy restaurants, and take breaks on our schedule. We always look for:
- A kitchen so we can cook ‘safe’ meals, we know our children will eat
- A secure garden or patio for safe outdoor time
We also a selection of toys and books – little touches that make unfamiliar places feel more manageable.
Embrace Nature
Nature has always been a big factor when planning our autism friendly UK holidays. It offers space, freedom, and a sensory reset. We really treasure the moments on a quiet woodland trail, spending hours collecting leaves, climbing logs and paddling in streams – no crowds, no overstimulation, just peace.
You don’t always need big days out, sometimes a quiet beach, a forest path, or a stroll around a reservoir can offer the best kind of holiday.
Favourites of ours include:
- National Trust gardens midweek
- Woodland trails
- Pebble beaches that stay quiet even in summer
Holiday Parks can be a great base for a holiday filled with opportunities to enjoy moments in nature. Here’s some of our favourite UK park holiday providers:

You don’t often see all inclusive August prices like this.
The benefit of an all inclusive holiday is that most of your holiday spends are covered, meaning budgeting is a lot easier. We love a buffet with our picky eaters. It makes meal time so much easier.
I’ve put the link to this deal in my link tree, or comment AUGUST and I’ll send it you in a DM 💛

Ksamil is a town on the Albanian Riviera and has had some very mixed reviews over the years, and I think a lot of that comes down to when you visit.
We absolutely loved our trip. It was incredibly affordable too - we paid £190 for six nights in an apartment that slept five! (This was in 2023) I’ve written a full blog post about the trip over on the website, where I’ve shared some great-value accommodation options and tips if you’re thinking about booking something similar.
Comment BLOG and I’ll send you the link along with some cheap flights and info on how to get there!
Expect things like:
🍻 £1.50 pints
🦐 Seafood dishes for under £10
☀️ Beautiful, crystal-clear beaches
We visited in May, when there were very few other people around. The town was just starting to open up for the season, the weather was lovely, and it felt relaxed and easy to enjoy.
June also seems like a great time to visit – a few more things open, but still without the peak summer crowds.
July and August appear to be a very different experience. The town is quite small, and it struggles to cope with the number of visitors in peak season. It can feel very crowded, and prices - particularly for things like sun loungers - can become very steep because of the demand.
So if Ksamil is on your list, timing really is everything!
