AX ODYCY, Malta – An Honest Family Review 2025
AX ODYCY, Malta – An Honest Family Review 2025
AX ODYCY, Malta – Where is it?
Nestled on the Qawra promenade right beside the Mediterranean, the AX ODYCY enjoys an enviable seafront location just about 20 metres from the waterline. I was first attracted to this hotel as it is only 2 years old (refurbished) and the reviews were insane! The hotel is attractive, clean and within walking distance to Bugibba’s shops, cafes and bustling promenade. A handy bus stop immediately outside the hotel offers direct links all around the island – you can get to Valletta in around 50 minutes, and Mdina, St. Julian’s about 30mins.
Facilities & Pools
The hotel boasts multiple pools designed to suit all ages:
- A spacious family outdoor swimming pool featuring two slides and a children’s splash pad/water play area, ideal for younger guests. My daughter LOVED the slides and spent hours going up and down them.
- There is also a handy indoor pool and although we visited in the height of summer it was actually nice to be able to be indoors and out of the sun.
- For adults only, there’s a stylish rooftop infinity pool (I didn’t get to spend any time here, but I did pop up there to have a look and it is stunning!) with hot tubs and panoramic views across St. Paul’s Bay a favourite spot for relaxation and scenic sunsets.
AX ODYCY offers a Kids Club supported by an animation team providing age‑appropriate entertainment and activities. The kids club runs from 10.00-12.30, 3-5pm and 8-9.30pm. The animation team also do games and activities around the pool at various points throughout the day.
Dining & Restaurants
There’s a variety of dining venues on-site at the AX ODYCY:
- Deck & Keel Buffet Restaurant: All-inclusive guests can enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner here with daily themed buffets and made-to-order stations.
- Minoa Mediterranean Fusion: A la carte dining offering contemporary Mediterranean dishes.
- Trattoria Riccardo: Italian-inspired menu with pasta, pizza and traditional dishes. Maybe the best pizza’s on the Island! this restaurant also has a self contained play area for young kids making it a great option for families.
- Several bars including Sidestreet Lounge (they often had musicians playing in the evening) and lots of space for families to play cards, Mamacita Latino‑inspired bar, pool bar, and sky bar Medusa for cocktails and light bites. We also tried Luzzo which is across the road but is part of the hotel – we didn’t rate this restaurant as the food wasn’t great.
Pricing varies depending on board basis:
- All-inclusive packages typically include these venues, buffet meals and drinks.
- For B&B or half-board stays, à la carte meals can range around €15‑25 for lunch, €20‑35 for dinner, cocktails around €8‑12, and specialty restaurant mains averaging €25‑40. A margarita pizza in Ricarrdo’s was around €10.
Rooms:
The Ax Odycy hosts a whole variety of rooms for all tastes and family sizes. The rooms were very modern (recently refurbished) and had all the necessary features like air con and mini fridge. We stayed in the most basic room which was the comfort room (sleeps 3) initially we had the land view but asked for an upgrade and were kindly given a comfort sea view room. Having visited I am glad we changed rooms. The land view rooms are at the back of the hotel and we did really appreciate our little balcony and sea view. The hotel also offers larger family rooms (sleeping 4) and a range of suites for the more luxurious stay.
Transport Links
Transport connections are a standout:
- A bus stop directly outside the AX ODYCY provides excellent connectivity to Valletta, Mdina, and Sliema and more all easily accessible without needing a rental car. Buses cost €2 and a ticket lasts for 2 hours. They don’t offer return tickets. You can also get a choice of buses to the airport. We took bus number TD13 to Valletta and the 214 to Mdina.
- Day trips to major island attractions are straightforward and budget-friendly on public buses.
- Malta also uses the bolt app and taxi’s are pretty reasonable. A 40 minute taxi ride from the airport cost us about €25 and the taxi’s are reliable. When you come out of Malta airport it’s good to note that the app hired taxi’s are on the concourse below the main airport (where the airport taxi’s go from).
Why Choose AX ODYCY?
- Family-friendly: Splash play, water‑park fun, supervised club for children and an adults‑only rooftop zone.
- Seafront & convenient: Central in Qawra, a short walk to Bugibba and excellent local transport right at the doorstep.
- Great value dining: Awarded well‑rated buffets, with à la carte options for a change of pace.
- Excellent reviews from families and couples alike, scoring over 9 out of 10 in guest satisfaction categories.
- There is also area just up from the hotel (Qawra Point Beach) where you can snorkel in a small bay area – it is very rocky but the snorkelling was good. If you are looking for a bit of glitz and glam there is Café del Mar Malta which is beach club and restaurant with lovely sunset views.
AX ODYCY – Travel Mum Final Thoughts:
AX ODYCY in Bugibba delivers on its promise of blending seaside relaxation with family-friendly activities. Whether you’re sliding into the splash pad, sipping a cocktail poolside at the rooftop, or boarding the bus to Valletta straight from your hotel, it provides both fun and flexibility. It’s an ideal base for families who want easy island access and couples craving scenic downtime.
Travel mum rating 8.5/10.

Ksamil is a town on the Albanian Riviera and has had some very mixed reviews over the years, and I think a lot of that comes down to when you visit.
We absolutely loved our trip. It was incredibly affordable too - we paid £190 for six nights in an apartment that slept five! (This was in 2023) I’ve written a full blog post about the trip over on the website, where I’ve shared some great-value accommodation options and tips if you’re thinking about booking something similar.
Comment BLOG and I’ll send you the link along with some cheap flights and info on how to get there!
Expect things like:
🍻 £1.50 pints
🦐 Seafood dishes for under £10
☀️ Beautiful, crystal-clear beaches
We visited in May, when there were very few other people around. The town was just starting to open up for the season, the weather was lovely, and it felt relaxed and easy to enjoy.
June also seems like a great time to visit – a few more things open, but still without the peak summer crowds.
July and August appear to be a very different experience. The town is quite small, and it struggles to cope with the number of visitors in peak season. It can feel very crowded, and prices - particularly for things like sun loungers - can become very steep because of the demand.
So if Ksamil is on your list, timing really is everything!
