What makes the Gdansk Christmas Market cheap to visit?
Poland is known for being a budget-friendly country, and Gdansk is one of its most affordable cities. At the Christmas market, you’ll find delicious street food like pierogi (Polish dumplings), kielbasa (sausages), and grzaniec (mulled wine), all for prices much lower than at other European Christmas markets. A hot meal and a drink won’t break the bank, making it easy to stick to your budget.
Accommodation in Gdansk is also very affordable, with a wide range of options, from cosy guesthouses, modern apartments to budget-friendly hotels. The city’s trams and buses are cheap, but many of the main attractions are easily walkable too.
Highlights of Gdansk Christmas Market
The Gdansk Christmas Market is located in the Targ Węglowy (Coal Market) and is full of festive cheer. The stalls are beautifully decorated and offer a range of Christmas goods, from handmade gifts and ornaments to delicious treats like gingerbread and roasted chestnuts. The market square is lit with twinkling lights, creating a magical atmosphere that’s perfect for getting into the holiday spirit.
Make sure you take the kids to visit Santa’s Grotto for a festive photo op (it’s free!), and take a spin on the Christmas carousel. Another highlight is the ice skating rink near the market, a fun and affordable way to embrace the winter season.

Cheap activities to do in Gdansk
Gdansk offers plenty of cheap or free activities, especially during the festive season. You could take a leisurely stroll through the city’s Old Town, where the streets are beautifully decorated with lights and ornaments. The medieval Long Market and the iconic Neptune’s Fountain make great photo opportunities, and, don’t forget, the city’s historic streets are free to explore!
You should also visit the stunning Mariacka Street – the only street with a complete row of terraces and take in the beautiful architecture of the city’s old buildings like St. Mary’s Basilica Tower which is only around £3 (you’ll need to be fit to climb 409 steps! But you’ll be rewarded with an incredible panoramic view of Gdańsk).
There are also free concerts and performances throughout the Christmas season, bringing even more life to the market. If you’re travelling with kids, visiting Father Christmas at the market is free, and little ones will love the festive atmosphere of the carousel and ice rink.
Beyond the market, Gdansk is rich in history. You could visit the Museum of the Second World War, one of the most important historical museums in Europe, or take a stroll along the Motlawa River, both of which are affordable and interesting ways to spend your time.
