A Complete Guide to Efteling Theme Park

If you’re looking for a European theme park that feels as magical as Disney but quieter, greener, and often cheaper, Efteling Theme Park in the Netherlands is the one. Think dark forests, glowing toadstools, whispering fairytales and some great rollercoasters all in one place.

This guide walks you through everything you need to know to plan an Efteling trip from the UK: how to get there, where to stay, what it costs, the must-do rides (with height requirements), where to eat, and practical tips – plus why we rate Bosrijk Village for the summer and Efteling Grand Hotel in winter.

Efteling Theme Park – The Basics

Efteling theme park is a huge fantasy-themed park in Kaatsheuvel, in the south of the Netherlands. It opened back in 1952 and is one of Europe’s oldest and most famous theme parks. Its rides and shows are based on European myths, legends and fairy tales rather than film IP, so it has a very unique feel – think more enchanted forest than flashing screens.

The park is split into themed “realms” and has:

  • Storybook areas like the Fairytale Forest, where you stroll through lifesize scenes from classic tales.
  • Big coasters such as Baron 1898, Python, Vogel Rok and Joris en de Draak.
  • Gorgeous landscaped lakes, forests and gardens, plus an evening fountain show set to music which we love!

It’s very much a “whole family” park – toddlers, teens and adults all have plenty to do.

Getting to Efteling from the UK

Efteling theme park sits between Tilburg and ’s-Hertogenbosch (Den Bosch). The nearest big airports are Amsterdam Schiphol and Eindhoven, but it’s also an easy train trip from London.

Option 1: Eurostar & trains (flight-free)

London – The Netherlands by train

  • Take Eurostar from London St Pancras to Brussels or Amsterdam, then an onward high-speed service into the Netherlands.
  • You can reach Tilburg in just over 4 hours on the fastest services.

Train to Efteling

From Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht or Schiphol you typically:

  • Take a train to Tilburg or ’s-Hertogenbosch (Den Bosch).
  • From there, catch bus 300, 301, 800 or 801 to the “Kaatsheuvel, Efteling” stop which is right outside the park.

This can be the easiest, most relaxing option with kids if travelling from the south of England – no airport faff, and you step off the bus pretty much at the main entrance.

Option 2: Fly then train/bus (or taxi)

Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) has the most flights from the UK. From Schiphol you can:

  • Take a direct train to Tilburg or via ’s-Hertogenbosch, then the same 300/301/800/801 bus to the park. We have done this a few times now, and it’s always been a smooth, easy journey.
  • Alternatively you can get an Uber or Bolt at the airport. We recently did this and it was £144 for a XL Uber to take us to the park. The journey took around an hour and a half. Note that if you want to get a taxi back it will likely be more expensive and needs booking in advance.
  • On our most recent visit, we got an Uber to Tilburg and then got the train which took us back to the airport.

You can also fly to Eindhoven (which is closer), but Schiphol usually has more flights and more convenient times.

Option 3: Drive or ferry/LeShuttle

If you’d rather have your own car:

  • Take LeShuttle or a ferry to France/Belgium/the Netherlands and drive up. Efteling is about 3–4 hours from Calais and roughly 1 hour from the Hook of Holland. We have taken the ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam and driven before. It naturally takes a lot longer than flying as the ferry is overnight.

Driving gives you freedom to explore nearby towns or combine Efteling with a wider Netherlands road trip.

Ticket Prices & What’s Included

Park tickets

  • Children 0–3 years: free
  • From 4 years+: prices vary by date between €38 and €53 per person. You choose a specific visit date when you book; busier days naturally cost more.

Parking

  • Parking currently costs €15 per day per car.

On-site stay & tickets

If you stay in one of Efteling’s official hotels or holiday villages (Bosrijk, Loonsche Land, Wonder Hotel, Grand Hotel):

  • Park access is included for all days of your stay, including arrival and departure days.
  • You also get early entry – 30 minutes before regular opening – via a special guests’ entrance. Not all rides are open in this half an hour, you can check the app to see which ones will be open.

Top Tip: Always double-check the exact package when you book, but in general, if you’re doing more than one day at the park, staying on-site can work out good value. A family of five paying €53 per person for a day ticket, and visiting the park on two days, will save €530 on tickets if they book an overnight stay at the park. Given you also get early park access and sometimes breakfast, staying on site can be a good shout.

Where to Stay: On-site & Off-site Options

Why stay on-site?

All Efteling accommodation is within walking distance of the park and comes with:

  • Unlimited park entry (including arrival and departure days)
  • Half-hour early entry
  • Loads of kid-friendly touches, play areas and theming.
  • Some include breakfast

You’ll pay more than a basic off-site hotel, but when you factor in tickets, transport and time saved getting in and out every day, it can be a smart choice – especially with younger kids.

We have stayed at both Bosrijk Village and the Grand Hotel, so I will talk briefly about these.

bosrijk-village

Bosrijk Village – Perfect for a summer stay

Efteling’s Bosrijk Village is a woodland holiday village just a short walk from the park. You stay in apartments, family houses or detached woodland cottages dotted around trees, sand dunes and a central lake. We have visited here with a group of friends, the kids loved playing in the forest, playgrounds and little streams that run around the village.

Why it’s brilliant in summer:

  • Forest setting: Kids can roam around on woodland paths, build dens and explore.
  • Playgrounds everywhere: There are multiple playgrounds and natural play elements: logs, forest huts, stepping stones and climbing structures.
  • Lake & Mr Sandman’s castle: A cute little castle sits in the lake and lights up at night; “Mr Sandman” reads bedtime stories at night.
  • Badhuys indoor pool: An indoor pool complex with baby, toddler and larger pools plus water play features, whirlpool and a lazy-river-style current.
  • Restaurant: You can easily dine at Het Eethuys for a relaxed, bistro-style family dinner. They have outdoor seating which is lovely in the Summer. Alternatively you can cook in your accommodation. There is a supermarket off site, not too far away, where you will get a better value food shop.

In summer, you can do the park in the morning and evening when it’s cooler, then let kids play in the woods or pool in the middle of the day. It feels more like a forest holiday with a theme park attached.

efteling-grand-hotel

Efteling Grand Hotel – Magical Luxury

Efteling Grand Hotel is the shiny new luxury hotel inside the park itself (opened August 2025). It sits next to the Aquanura lake with views towards the Fairytale Forest and fountain show.

Why it’s a dream choice in winter:

  • Cosy, fairytale interiors: Think Wes-Anderson-meets-storybook: pastel colours, key-shaped chandeliers, self-playing pianos, singing princesses and little interactive details.
  • Spa & pool: Ideal when it’s cold outside; you can warm up in the spa or pool before heading back into Winter Efteling with a hot chocolate.

On-site restaurants

  • Brasserie 7: Classic dishes, a breakfast buffet for hotel guests and terrace views over Aquanura.
  • Restaurant & Bar Mystique: A multi-course “surprise” tasting menu drawing on seasonal, local ingredients with a strong storytelling theme (great for a special grown-ups’ dinner).
  • Café Biscuit: Coffee specials and the hotel’s signature biscuit – perfect for warming up mid-afternoon.

Private park access & early entry: Hotel guests enter via a dedicated gate and get early access to selected attractions, which is especially handy on colder, darker days when queues are shorter first thing.

Winter at Efteling already feels magical – twinkling lights, fire pits, and a festive atmosphere – and the Grand Hotel makes it a full-on fairytale city-break.

GuestHouse-Hotel-Kaatsheuvel

Hotels Near Efteling Theme Park

If you’re on a tighter budget, there are plenty of off-site options in Kaatsheuvel, Waalwijk and Tilburg.

Our favourite off site hotel by far is GuestHouse Hotel Kaatsheuvel – A modern, affordable option and just a 10 minute walk to the theme park. It has big family rooms and a play areas outside for children. The restaurant there is great too.

Note: Off-site stays won’t include park tickets or early entry, but can be good if you’re combining a day trip to Efteling with exploring other parts of the Netherlands.

Efteling Theme Park Rides (with Height Requirements)

There are over 60 attractions at Efteling Theme Park, here’s a list of our favourites that you can’t miss. Always check height requirements before arriving at the queue. The last thing you need is a disappointed child who is a few cm too small!

Big Rollercoasters at Efteling Theme Park

Baron 1898

A brilliantly themed dive coaster: a near-vertical drop into a “mine shaft”. Huge G-forces and very intense.

1.32m minimum height requirement.

Python

Classic looping steel coaster with multiple inversions.

1.2m minimum height requirement.

Joris en de Draak

Twin wooden racing coasters (Fire vs Water) that race each other around the track – loads of airtime and speed. The first ‘proper’ rollercoaster my son Leo has been big enough for!

1.10m minimum height requirement.

Vogel Rok

Fast, indoor coaster in the dark themed to the giant Roc bird from Arabian Nights – no inversions, but very disorientating.

1.2m minimum height requirement.

De Vliegende Hollander

Dark ride and water coaster hybrid – eerie queue through a cursed 17th-century harbour, then a boat-to-coaster segment with a big splash at the end.

1.2m minimum height requirement.

efteling-theme-park

Family coasters & “big kid” rides

Max & Moritz – Double-track family coaster with gentle spins and fun storytelling; designed for kids 4–10 but fun for adults too.

1m minimum – 1.00 – 1.30 must ride with an adult.

Piraña – Big river rapids ride through a pre-Columbian landscape – spinning rafts, waterfalls, and a high chance of getting soaked. Really fun ride for the summer months, one that even tiny ones can get involved in

Children must walk independently. Under 1m must sit on an adults lap.

Halve Maen – Huge swinging pirate ship with stomach-dropping airtime if you sit at the ends. Apparently the tallest pirate ship in the world!

1m minimum height requirement. Under 1.2m must ride with an adult.

Efteling-theme-park

Signature Dark Rides & Gentle Family Classics

These rides are great if you have really tiny ones with you. We have taken our baby on them all before he could walk.

Symbolica – Stunning trackless dark ride through a magical palace. You “glide” through scenes with animatronics, special effects and interactive moments.

No minimum height.

Droomvlucht – Dreamy suspended dark ride through forests of fairies, trolls and floating castles – pure Efteling magic.

No minimum height.

Fata Morgana – Boat-based dark ride through a 1001 Nights world of markets, palaces and mysterious dungeons.

No minimum height.

Carnaval Festival – Colourful slow ride through animatronic scenes of different countries – catchy music guaranteed to stick in your head.

No minimum height.

Fairytale Forest – Walk-through forest of classic fairytales brought to life with moving scenes, music and narration – a must with young kids.

Easy to walk round with a pram.

Efteling Theme Park Food

One of the joys of Efteling is that food is part of the storytelling. You’ll find everything from Dutch pancakes to Italian, medieval feasts and simple fast food.

In-park favourites

1. Polles Keuken (pancake restaurant)

Near Symbolica, this is a whirling fairytale kitchen where copper kettles bubble and gears spin while you eat. Expect:

  • Sweet and savoury crêpes and pancakes from late morning.
  • A special heart-shaped pancake kids can decorate themselves with fruit or sweets.

Ideal for a sit-down lunch or an early dinner; it books up at busy times so consider reserving on the app.

2. Pinokkio’s Pizza & Pasta

Located near the theatre / entrance area, this is your classic family-pleasing Italian:

  • Fresh pizzas and pastas à la carte.
  • Kid-sized portions available.

3. Het Wapen van Raveleijn

A medieval-themed tavern adjoining the Raveleijn show area:

  • Offers a set three-course feast with drinks included, with hearty platters and rustic meat dishes.
  • Great as a “big treat” meal, especially if you pair it with watching the Raveleijn show.

4. Panorama (self-service & à la carte)

Panorama’s self-service section has:

  • Hot main dishes, drinks and desserts you can grab quickly and carry to a table – very handy at peak times with hungry kids.

5. Quick bites & snacks

Across the park you’ll also find:

  • Stalls for frites (chips) and snacks,
  • Ice cream stands,
  • Cafés for coffee and pastries,
  • Simple take-away counters (burgers, hotdogs, etc.).

The Efteling app and website have a full, filterable restaurant list, including vegetarian and halal options.

Efteling-theme-park

Eating at the on-site accommodations

You don’t need to be staying at the accommodations to eat at their restaurants.

Bosrijk

  • Het Eethuys – cosy bistro-style restaurant with a kids’ menu and classic mains; perfect if you don’t fancy cooking in your holiday home.
  • Fresh bread/ breakfast can be pre-ordered and delivered to your accommodation in the morning, or you can self-cater.

Loonsche Land

  • Restaurant De Proeftuyn – serves breakfast and hearty dinners with meat, fish and vegetarian dishes, plus seasonal specials. Guests can also order breakfast delivery to their holiday homes.

Efteling Grand Hotel

  • Brasserie 7 – breakfast for hotel guests, plus lunch/dinner for hotel and park guests, with a menu built around “seven magical ingredients” and a terrace overlooking Aquanura. Highly recommend this one for lunch or dinner, even if you aren’t staying at the hotel. Great food and decent prices.
  • Restaurant & Bar Mystique – a longer, storytelling tasting menu with surprising dishes and cocktails; very atmospheric, better with older kids or adults.
  • Café Biscuit – coffee, patisserie and the hotel’s signature biscuit.

Top Tips for Making the Most of Efteling Theme Park

To finish, here are some practical tips that make a big difference, especially with kids.

1. Visit over at least two (ideally three) days

With over 60 attractions plus shows, you’ll struggle to “do it all” in one day, especially with little ones who want to explore the Fairytale Forest at their own pace. Many UK families find two park days plus a third “favourites” day ideal.

2. Use early entry wisely

If you’re staying on-site, use that 30-minute early entry to ride one or two big attractions (Symbolica, Baron 1898, Python, Max & Moritz) before the queues build.

3. Measure your kids before you go

Because height rules vary so much (1.00 m, 1.10 m, 1.20 m, 1.32 m):

  • Measure kids at home, shoes on.
  • Set expectations e.g. “you’re tall enough for Max & Moritz and Piraña, but not Baron 1898”.
  • At the park, staff often give wristbands indicating height, which helps reduce re-measuring at each ride.

4. Download the Efteling app

The official app shows:

  • Live queue times,
  • A map and route planning,
  • Restaurant info and sometimes mobile ordering,
  • Which attractions are under maintenance.

It’s essential if you want to minimise walking and queueing with little legs.

5. Pack for all weather (and getting soaked)

The Netherlands can throw all four seasons at you in a day:

  • Take light waterproofs or ponchos – useful for Piraña and sudden showers.
  • Layer up – you might be hot in the sunshine and chilly in shaded queues or evening shows.

In winter, hats, gloves and warm boots make a huge difference.

6. Plan your food breaks

  • Aim for early or late lunch (e.g. 11:30 or 14:00) to dodge the worst of the lunchtime rush at places like Polles Keuken.
  • If you’re budget-conscious, share bigger mains, bring snacks, and use self-service spots for quicker/cheaper hot food.

7. Mix “big” rides with gentle time

With kids, it’s easy to overdo the thrills and meltdowns follow. Alternate:

  • A big ride (coaster or Piraña),
  • Then a gentle dark ride or Fairytale Forest wander,
  • Then a playground stop.

8. Don’t skip the shows & Aquanura

The Aquanura fountain show is a lovely way to end the day – water, lights and music on the main lake. Plan to be near the front at least once.

Depending on your kids’ attention span, the Raveleijn show and other smaller performances are also worth catching – check times in the app. Note that performances are in Dutch, this matters less with Raveleijn as the action will keep the kids attention.

9. If you’re driving, pre-book parking & know your bus options

  • Pre-buy a parking ticket online or in the app to avoid queues at machines (cost around €15 per day).
  • If you’re staying off-site without a car, note the key bus numbers – 300, 301, 800, 801 – from Tilburg/Den Bosch to Efteling.

10. Think seasonally: Bosrijk in Summer, Grand Hotel in Winter

  • Summer – long evenings, warm weather, kids desperate to be outside. Bosrijk gives you forests, outdoor play, a lake and swims in Badhuys, plus easy walk-in access to the park.
  • Winter – crisp air, dark early nights, twinkly lights everywhere. Efteling Grand Hotel wraps all that in luxury with its spa, restaurants and views over the illuminated park and Aquanura.

Efteling is one of those places families end up returning to again and again. It has the magic and immersion of a big-name park, but with more trees, more soul, and – often – a much more manageable price tag.

We visited the Grand Hotel as part of a PR visit. We had visited Efteling many times before this and it remains a family favourite.

We have just visited Efteling in the Netherlands for the FIFTH time, but for the first time in winter 😍 It is such a magical place anyway, but there is something VERY special about it in winter. It’s one of our favourite places to visit as a family.

We were staying at their Grand Hotel for a PR visit and the hotel is INCREDIBLE. It’s their 5* luxury offering, putting you right in the centre of the park. I’ll be posting a hotel tour tomorrow and a blog post this week.

Would you take your 4 year old to Glastonbury festival?! Here’s a sneak peek of what we got up to today 🤩

The main sets don’t start until tomorrow (Friday) so we spent today doing whatever Leo wanted to do! There is so much here for kids. We went to the seaside pier, played in both kidz fields, did crafts, spent a few hours at the circus and had a fantastic day! Everything is included in your ticket price. Leo is about to go to bed with his Nan and we’re going to go out out 👀🙌🏻🍻
