Family Days Out Manchester – A Complete Guide 2026
Family Days Out Manchester – A Complete Guide 2026
Manchester is a brilliant base for family days out, whether you’re visiting for a long weekend or looking for new ideas close to home. From free museums and interactive attractions to football tours and indoor skydiving, there’s plenty to keep kids (and adults) entertained – even if the weather doesn’t cooperate.
This post pulls together family-friendly attractions, places to stay, and nearby day trips, with a focus on activities that work well for larger families too.
Let’s crack on with our guide to the best family days out Manchester.
Free Family Days Out Manchester
Manchester has an impressive number of free attractions, making it ideal for budget-friendly days out.
Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI)
Hands-on galleries, real aircraft, and interactive exhibits make this a hit for school-age kids. It’s easy to spend several hours here without spending a penny.
Manchester Museum
Recently refurbished, the museum combines natural history, ancient artefacts and interactive discovery zones. Great for mixed-age groups. There are always great exhibitions on here too!
Heaton Park
One of Europe’s largest municipal parks, with playgrounds, open space, boating lakes and seasonal attractions. Ideal for picnics and letting kids burn off energy.
Whitworth Art Gallery & Park
More low-key, but surprisingly family-friendly, especially combined with a walk or bike ride through Whitworth Park.
Family-Friendly Hotels in Manchester
Combining family days out Manchester with a staycation can be a fun idea!
If you’re staying overnight, accommodation choice matters – especially for families!
Look for:
- Family rooms or suites rather than standard doubles
- Aparthotels with separate sleeping areas
- Hotels close to tram stops to minimise walking
Areas like Salford Quays, City Centre North, and Trafford work well for families and give easy access to major attractions and can be more budget friendly.
Sea Life Manchester
Located at Trafford Palazzo (part of the Trafford Centre), SEA LIFE Manchester is a manageable-size aquarium that works well for younger children. Highlights include the ocean tunnel, interactive rock pools and regular feeding talks. There’s also a soft play area on site, which my kids loved – it’s a great way for little ones to burn off energy while parents can relax (maybe!)
It pairs well with nearby attractions and is easy to combine with lunch or shopping, making it a solid half-day option. Sometimes there are paired tickets with LEGOLAND® Discovery Centre.
LEGOLAND® Discovery Centre Manchester
Right next door to SEA LIFE is LEGOLAND Discovery Centre which is aimed primarily at children aged 3–10. Expect:
- Build zones
- Small rides
- A 4D cinema
- A LEGO model of Manchester landmarks
Advance booking is recommended, especially during school holidays.
Manchester activities for older children and teens
The Crystal Maze LIVE Experience (Family Sessions)
For older kids and teens, The Crystal Maze offers family-friendly sessions where teamwork and problem-solving take centre stage. It’s best suited to families with children aged around 9+ and is a great option if you’re travelling with teens who want something more challenging.
We haven’t visited this attraction as a family yet, but we have been here to celebrate my husband’s birthday – and it was so much fun!
Junkyard Golf Manchester
Bright, loud and unapologetically fun, Junkyard Golf offers themed crazy golf courses in the city centre. Some venues offer family-friendly time slots, so it’s worth checking ahead if visiting with younger children too!
Again, I’ve only experienced this one without the kids, but I can definitely vouch for it as a great activity for adults too!
iFLY Indoor Skydiving
For thrill-seeking families, iFLY Manchester offers indoor skydiving experiences suitable for children aged 3+. It’s well organised, safety-focused and surprisingly inclusive for different ages and abilities.
Museum of Illusions Manchester
A great indoor option for rainy days, the Museum of Illusions combines optical tricks, interactive rooms and photo opportunities. It’s quick to get through but works well as part of a city-centre itinerary.
Manchester Football Stadium Tours
Manchester is football heaven, and stadium tours are a must for many families. We haven’t managed to do this yet, but with a football mad daughter it’s definitely something we’re considering soon. We have attended an England Women’s football match here though and the atmosphere was incredible!
You can explore both Old Trafford, home of Manchester United, and the Etihad Stadium, home of Manchester City. Both tours offer behind-the-scenes access, including dressing rooms, player tunnels, and pitch-side views, making them enjoyable even for those who aren’t die-hard football fans.
Family-Friendly Theatres in Manchester
Manchester has several theatres that welcome families, offering everything from children’s shows to family-friendly musicals. Whether you’re looking for a short matinee or a full evening performance, there’s usually something suitable for all ages.

Sightseeing Tours & Walking Experiences
If you want to explore without constant planning, guided tours can be a great option.
Hop-On Hop-Off Sightseeing Bus
A relaxed way to see key landmarks without tiring little legs.
Treasure Hunt–Themed Walking Tours
Self-guided treasure hunts are ideal for families — kids stay engaged, and adults still get the sightseeing experience. These are particularly good for mixed-age groups.
Manchester Airport: Planning Your Trip
If you’re flying in or out, Manchester Airport is one of the UK’s busiest and offers plenty of facilities for families.

Nearby Attractions for Day Trips
Manchester also makes a great base for day trips.
Alton Towers
Around 1.5 hours away, Alton Towers works well for a full day or overnight trip, especially for families with older children.
Alton Towers Resort offers a huge range of options for families, whether you’re planning a day visit or a short stay. From thrilling rides and rollercoasters to immersive themed rooms and indoor waterparks, there’s something for children of all ages – and plenty to keep adults entertained too. The resort also features beautiful gardens, interactive play areas, and seasonal events, making it easy to fill a full day or enjoy a relaxed overnight trip. It’s a destination that truly lives up to its reputation and rarely disappoints, no matter what type of family adventure you’re after.
Chester Zoo
One of the UK’s best zoos and an easy drive or train journey from Manchester.
Peak District National Park
Ideal for slower days, outdoor walks and scenic villages.
Family Days Out Manchester – Final Thoughts
Manchester is a city that genuinely caters to families – whether you’re travelling with toddlers, teens or a mix of both. With free museums, hands-on attractions, sports experiences and easy access to nearby adventures, it’s a destination that works just as well for short breaks as it does for longer stays.

Ksamil is a town on the Albanian Riviera and has had some very mixed reviews over the years, and I think a lot of that comes down to when you visit.
We absolutely loved our trip. It was incredibly affordable too - we paid £190 for six nights in an apartment that slept five! (This was in 2023) I’ve written a full blog post about the trip over on the website, where I’ve shared some great-value accommodation options and tips if you’re thinking about booking something similar.
Comment BLOG and I’ll send you the link along with some cheap flights and info on how to get there!
Expect things like:
🍻 £1.50 pints
🦐 Seafood dishes for under £10
☀️ Beautiful, crystal-clear beaches
We visited in May, when there were very few other people around. The town was just starting to open up for the season, the weather was lovely, and it felt relaxed and easy to enjoy.
June also seems like a great time to visit – a few more things open, but still without the peak summer crowds.
July and August appear to be a very different experience. The town is quite small, and it struggles to cope with the number of visitors in peak season. It can feel very crowded, and prices - particularly for things like sun loungers - can become very steep because of the demand.
So if Ksamil is on your list, timing really is everything!
