Things To Do in Budapest With Kids – A 2026 Guide
Things To Do in Budapest With Kids – A 2026 Guide
If you’re looking for your next city break with kids, or if you want to take the leap for your first one, Budapest is such a brilliant option. It’s fun, affordable and surprisingly easy with children.
Packed with fairy-tale castles, boat rides, parks and thermal baths (which are essentially a glorified swimming pools) you won’t be short on things to do. Not only that, but it is great value compared to other European capital cities, which makes a huge difference when travelling as a family. Having done many city breaks with kids, this is a city that doesn’t feel like hard work and offers lots for adults and children alike to enjoy. Here’s my guide on the best things to do in Budapest with kids.
Take a Danube River Cruise
One of the best things to do in Budapest with kids is also one of the easiest. A Danube River cruise lets you see some of the city’s most impressive landmarks without walking very far at all which is perfect if you’re travelling with younger children or just want a relaxed start to your trip.
I’d recommend trying to time this just before sunset, meaning you’ll see the city transition from daylight to nighttime. From the boat, you’ll spot the Hungarian Parliament Building, Buda Castle, and the famous bridges connecting Buda and Pest.
Thermal Baths
There are two great options to choose from, and yes, kids are welcome, despite what you might read elsewhere.
Széchenyi Baths is one of the most famous options if you’re travelling to Budapest. As you can imagine, it can get busy, so I’d recommend making the most of your early rises if travelling with kids and go for opening. You can make us of the different outdoor pools before the crowds descend.
Palatinus Strand on Margaret Island
This outdoor bath complex on Margaret Island feels more like a water park than a spa, with pools, slides, wave pools, and plenty of space to play. It’s an easy win for families and a great way to break up sightseeing days.
Children’s Railway
This is one of those hidden gems that kids absolutely adore and takes you off the beaten track. The Children’s Railway is a real working train, but it’s run mostly by children, with adults supervising.
It travels through the Buda Hills and feels like a proper adventure away from the main city sights. With lookout towers and forest playgrounds, it’s a fantastic way to combine sightseeing with something genuinely fun and different, and one your children are likely to remember.
Floating Bus Tour
Who doesn’t love a bus that becomes a boat? This is a brilliantly unique activity that surprises kids of all ages and keeps them engaged throughout. It’s also a great option if you want to see the city in a different way without committing to a long tour.
Free things to do in Budapest with kids
Margaret Island
Margaret Island is a brilliant family escape right in the middle of Budapest. This long, green island in the Danube is car-free, flat, and perfect for families. You’ll find playgrounds, fountains, wide paths for scooters or bikes, and plenty of spots for picnics.
You can hire bikes or pedal carts, let kids run freely without worrying about traffic, or simply enjoy a slower-paced afternoon. If you’re visiting Budapest with kids, this is the perfect place for downtime and a welcome break from sightseeing.
Visit City Park
If you’re anything like me, travelling with kids always means knowing where a decent park is for that much-needed downtime. City Park is a great option and one we found ourselves returning to more than once.
Throughout the year, the park hosts different seasonal activities, which adds an extra layer of excitement for kids. The playground here is a great one, and it’s easy to combine a visit with nearby attractions or a relaxed picnic.
Visit Szimpla Kert Ruin Bar
This is a really fun place to visit during the day when it’s quieter and more family-friendly. The quirky decor and colourful rooms make it interesting even for older children, while adults can enjoy the atmosphere without it feeling rushed.
Shoes on the Danube
The Shoes on the Danube is a simple but powerful memorial along the riverbank. While it’s more suited to older children, it’s a meaningful stop that can spark important conversations in an age-appropriate way.
Things To Do in Budapest With Kids – Final Thoughts
Is Budapest Worth Visiting with Kids?
Absolutely. If you’re looking for a destination packed with things to do in Budapest with kids, this city ticks all the boxes. It’s fun without being chaotic, cultural without being boring, and affordable without feeling basic.
From boat rides and castles to splash parks and green spaces, Budapest proves that city breaks with kids can be relaxed, exciting, and genuinely memorable. If you’re planning your next family city break, Budapest deserves a spot right at the top of your list.
