Villa Holidays for Families: Why They’re Perfect (and How to Plan One That Actually Works)

Villa holidays for families offer the perfect mix of space, freedom, and relaxation – something hotels often struggle to match. After multiple family villa trips in Lanzarote. Spain and Portugal, I’ve seen firsthand how much easier life can be with separate bedrooms, private outdoor areas, and the ability to eat and play on your own schedule.

Whether it’s breakfast by the pool, lazy afternoons after the beach, or evenings spent cooking together, villa stays let families truly unwind and enjoy time together. Villas also work brilliantly for extended family or groups of friends, giving everyone room to spread out while still enjoying shared meals and activities together.

In this guide, I’ll share what to look for when booking, tips from my own experiences, and practical advice on flights, car hire, and day trips – plus trusted resources to help you plan a villa holiday that really works for the whole family.

Some people worry about booking DIY but I can honestly say we’ve never had an issue and it’s really easy once you break it down. However, with some providers there is still the option to book as a package which includes your villa, flights (including baggage) and car hire.

Why Villa Holidays Work So Well for Families

While a hotel stay might feel like a break from cooking, cleaning, and everyday routines, in practice it doesn’t always suit families – especially with younger children, but the extra space is also really important with older children.

Flexibility Around Meals and Routine

Children often get tired after long days at the beach and may not fancy getting ready for dinner. Sometimes it’s better to enjoy a nice lunch out and a relaxed dinner at the villa – pizza on the sofa, or breakfast in your pyjamas – so everyone is well-rested for the next day. Too much stimulation can lead to tantrums, which is no fun for anyone!

Separate Bedrooms Make Life Easier

One of the biggest advantages of villas is separate bedrooms and living areas. Adults can get a decent night’s sleep, while younger children go to bed when they’re tired. This applies during the day too – toddlers can nap when needed, and you can still enjoy some pool time in peace.

(This is also possible in a hotel – link to large fams blog)

Private Pools and Home Comforts

When my children were toddlers, we loved having a private pool they could get in and out of freely. There’s no need to pack bags, rush to the toilet, or navigate hotel rules –  everything is right at your doorstep. Many children thrive on routine, and having a home-away-from-home environment makes holidays far more enjoyable for our family.

Budget Flexibility

Villas give you full control over your budget. You can eat in or out as much as you like, mixing meals at home with treats at restaurants. Breakfasts in the garden are always a hit, and children love the freedom to jump straight into the pool afterwards.

Great for Extended Family or Friends

Villas are also an ideal choice when holidaying with extended family or friends. Everyone can enjoy meals and activities together without anyone moaning about returning to a room. Splitting the cost makes it an affordable and sociable option, too.

What to Look for When Booking a Family Villa

What you look for in a family villa will very much depend on your family, your children’s ages, and how you like to holiday. A villa that works brilliantly for one family might feel completely wrong for another. Over the years, and through several villa holidays with children of different ages, I’ve found it’s less about finding the perfect villa and more about choosing one that fits your routine, priorities, and travel style.

Before booking, it’s worth thinking about how you’ll actually use the villa day-to-day — from sleep and meal times to pool time, outings, and downtime. Below are the key things I always consider when booking a villa holiday with my family.

  • Number of bedrooms and layout
This is especially important if you’re travelling with younger children. Think about who’s sharing, proximity to parents’ rooms, and whether the layout suits nap times and early bedtimes.
  • Number of bathrooms and their location
A big factor when travelling as a group. Ensuite bathrooms can make mornings and bedtimes much smoother, particularly when sharing with extended family or friends.
  • Pool setup
Consider the size and depth of the pool, whether it’s heated, and if a pool fence is needed. Pool fencing is often available but can come at an additional cost, so it’s worth checking in advance.
  • Location and proximity
Look at how close the villa is to beaches, the resort centre, restaurants, attractions, and supermarkets. This can make a huge difference to how relaxed your days feel.
  • Parking
If you’re hiring a car, check whether parking is available at or near the villa.
  • Amenities
Washing machine, dishwasher, Wi-Fi, and air conditioning are all things we now consider essential when travelling as a family.

Villa holidays for families: Our Experience

We’ve stayed in a variety of villas across Lanzarote, Spain and Portugal, and each trip was slightly different depending on the type of holiday we were after, the ages of our children at the time, and whether we were travelling with family or friends. Over the years, we’ve learned that no two villa holidays are the same, and what works beautifully for one trip may not suit another.

When choosing villas, we always focused on the things that matter most to our family – number of bedrooms and bathrooms, pool setup, proximity to beaches or attractions, parking, and essential amenities like air-conditioning, Wi-Fi, and a washing machine. These considerations helped ensure that each holiday was as relaxing and enjoyable as possible for everyone.

Sharing a few of our favourite moments here will give you a sense of what a villa holiday can feel like for a family – from lazy mornings by the pool to fun evening dips in the pool or exploring nearby beaches and towns.

Here are a few villas that could suit different family needs — check them out using the links below and see which might work for your next holiday

Villa Holidays for Families: Booking Villas + Flights vs Packages

When planning a villa holiday, there are a few ways to go about it, and the best option depends on how much planning you enjoy (or have time for!).

For our family, we usually book the villa and flights separately. This gives us flexibility to choose flight times that suit school holidays, allows us to pick the villa that fits our family’s needs, and often works out more cost-effective. Don’t let the DIY element put you off – with a little planning, it’s easier than it sounds, and the freedom to create your own schedule is worth it.

That said, package options are available if you’d prefer something more hands-off. For example, Jet2 Villa Holidays and TUI Villa Holidays offers villa packages where flights and accommodation are bundled together, taking care of the logistics while still giving you the comfort and flexibility of a villa. We’ve actually recently published a guide to Jet2Villas!

Booking separately or choosing a package both work – the key is picking what feels easiest and most enjoyable for your family.

Villa Holidays for Families: Car Hire

If you’re booking your villa and flights separately and staying somewhere that isn’t within walking distance of the beach, restaurants, or supermarkets, hiring a car can make things much easier. It gives you the freedom to get around at your own pace, pick up groceries, and visit local attractions without depending on taxis or public transport.

Having a car also allows you to explore the area independently, rather than following the schedule of organised excursions. We enjoy being able to drive to nearby towns, quiet beaches, or scenic spots and take our time seeing everything at our own pace. For us, this flexibility is one of the things that makes villa holidays feel relaxed, flexible, and truly family-friendly.

Villa Holidays for Families: Easy Day Trips

One of the best things about villa holidays for families is how easy it is to plan day trips that suit everyone. Having your own base means you can mix fun days out with slower, relaxed days at the beach or by the pool, without feeling rushed. We usually balance water parks or theme parks with cultural trips and plenty of downtime, making it easy to plan days around the children’s ages, energy levels, and interests.

Villa Holidays for Families: Final Thoughts

Villa holidays give families the space, freedom, and flexibility that hotels often can’t, whether it’s splashing in your own pool, enjoying relaxed meals together, or exploring beaches and local towns at your own pace. From toddler-friendly pools to villas perfect for larger groups or right in the heart of the action, there’s something for every family. Add a car for extra flexibility, plan a few day trips, and your villa holiday quickly feels like a home away from home. Check out the villa options, flights, car hire, and day trips linked in this post — and start planning your next unforgettable family getaway!

Another Merlin Pass sale for those who missed the last one! We are loving ours so far, it’s so handy to have what feels like a “free” day out when you don’t know what to do with the kids. We’re going to Alton Towers this weekend and it was super easy to log into the pass portal and get tickets for us.

It’s also great for a trip to London as there are tons of attractions there that you can use it on 💛

Comment MERLIN and I’ll send you the link. Alternatively you’ll find it in my linktree
