Best Beach Holidays in Europe for Families – A Complete Guide
Best Beach Holidays in Europe for Families – A Complete Guide
If you’ve ever headed to the beach with kids, you’ll know it’s not always as simple as throwing a towel in your bag and heading for the sea. Suddenly, there’s a checklist as long as your arm -snacks, buckets, hats, shade, spare clothes… and that’s before you’ve even thought about the beach itself.
Some beaches are perfect for families, with soft sand, calm seas, and plenty of facilities nearby. Others, not so much, think steep drops, big waves, or nowhere to buy an emergency ice cream.
That’s why I’ve pulled together this guide to the 10 best beach holidays in Europe for families. These are the places where children can safely paddle and play while parents can actually relax a little. I’ve also included two family-friendly hotels near each beach, so you can plan a holiday that works for everyone.
1. Playa de Muro, Majorca, Spain
If I could design the perfect family beach from scratch, it would look a lot like Playa de Muro. This six-kilometre stretch of soft white sand is ideal for little legs. The water stays shallow for ages, so children can paddle safely, and it’s calm, meaning no scary waves knocking them over.
There are loads of cafés, restaurants, and supermarkets right by the beach, which is a godsend when someone needs snacks now. You’ll also find shady spots and pram-friendly walkways. It’s a strong contender for the best beach holidays in Europe for families!
Mum tip: Playa de Muro is long enough to find a quieter patch even in peak season, perfect for naps under a beach tent or some family downtime away from the crowds.
Where to stay:
- Iberostar Playa de Muro – Just steps from the sand, this hotel has a brilliant splash park, soft play, and shaded pool areas. The evening entertainment is fun without being too loud.
- Zafiro Bahia – If your kids love pirate ships, you’ll win parent points here. The splash park has a full-on pirate water playground, and the rooms are spacious enough for families.
2. Cala Galdana, Menorca, Spain
Menorca is often overshadowed by its bigger Balearic sisters, but for families, it’s a dream. Cala Galdana is a calm horseshoe bay with crystal-clear waters and fine sand – think Caribbean vibes with a Mediterranean twist. It’s Blue Flag, which means it’s clean and safe, so we couldn’t not add it to our list of the best beach holidays in Europe for families.
The beach is backed by pine trees, so there’s natural shade when you’ve had enough sun. The shallow waters make it a paddling paradise, and there are pedalos if you fancy a gentle family boat ride.
Mum tip: The beach is pram-friendly, and the nearby cafés all welcome kids – many even have toy boxes or play corners so parents can sip a coffee in peace.
Where to stay:
- Melia Cala Galdana – Direct access to the beach, family rooms, and kids’ clubs for all ages. Parents will appreciate the coffee bar on-site for those early mornings.
- Hotel Minura Cala Galdana – Just 150m from the beach, this is a great budget-friendly option. Choose a room with a balcony so you can relax once the kids are asleep.
3. Praia da Falésia, The Algarve, Portugal
The Algarve is sunshine central, with more than 300 days of sun a year. Praia da Falésia is one of the region’s most family-friendly beaches, stretching between Albufeira and Vilamoura. The golden sand is backed by dramatic cliffs, and there’s space for kids to run around without feeling crowded.
The beach has shallow sections perfect for paddling, plus loads of nearby cafés and restaurants. Portugal is also known for being super family-friendly – don’t be surprised if waiters happily coo over your little ones at dinner.
Mum tip: Visit in autumn – temperatures are still warm but not too hot, making it much easier to enjoy a full beach day without overheating.
Where to stay:
- 3HB Falesia Garden – Great value apartments with direct beach access, kids’ pool, and a playground. Perfect for families who like the flexibility of self-catering.
- AP Victoria Sports & Beach – A lively option with a splash park, kids’ club, and even an athletics track (ideal for older siblings with energy to burn).
4. Playa Es Cana, Ibiza, Spain
Forget Ibiza’s party image, the north-east coast is a totally different vibe. Playa Es Cana is calm, shallow, and backed by relaxed family restaurants. The water is clear and still, perfect for splashing and paddling, so it was sure to make our list of the best beach holidays in Europe for families.
Parents will love that everything is within walking distance – beach, cafés, supermarkets, and hotels. There’s even a famous hippy market nearby, which is a fun family outing.
Mum tip: Bring a little net for rock pooling – the shallow water is brilliant for spotting tiny fish and shells, and kids love the sense of discovery.
Where to stay:
- Leonardo Royal Hotel Ibiza & Suites – Right on the beach with a splash park, playground, and big family rooms.
- Invisa Hotel Ereso – Just 200m from the sand, with a splash park, playground, and tennis courts.
5. Mellieha Bay, Malta
Malta might be small, but Mellieha Bay is big on family appeal. This golden-sand beach has shallow, calm water that stays safe even far out. The bay is sheltered, so no strong waves.
Children will love the gentle slope into the water, while parents will love the easy access to cafés and ice cream shops. A big bonus? Popeye Village (a quirky theme park) is just up the road.
Mum tip: Malta has mild winters, so Mellieha Bay is a great option for off-season sun – quieter beaches and fewer queues for attractions.
Where to stay:
- db Seabank Resort & Spa – A family all-rounder with bowling, indoor play, and multiple pools. Just steps from the beach.
- Radisson Blu Golden Sands – Direct beach access, kids’ club, and a children’s pool. Great if you want a mix of luxury and fun.
6. Fig Tree Bay, Cyprus
Regularly voted one of Europe’s best beaches, Fig Tree Bay is as family-friendly as it is beautiful. The sand is powdery soft, and the sea is calm and shallow. Perfect for our list of the best beach holidays in Europe for families.
The atmosphere here is peaceful compared to busier parts of Cyprus, which makes it a great choice if you’ve got children who nap easily in quieter surroundings.
Mum tip: Bring a beach tent for shade – the Cypriot sun is strong even in spring and autumn, so it’s worth having a shady spot for rest time.
Where to stay:
- Cavo Maris Beach Hotel – A playground, kids’ club, children’s pool, and beachfront location. Basically, it ticks all the family boxes.
- Louis St Elias Resort – Waterslides, splash pools, and family-friendly dining (with plenty of options for fussy eaters).
7. Glyfada Beach, Corfu, Greece
Corfu is a family favourite, and Glyfada Beach is one of its most beautiful spots. Golden sand, shallow sea, and dramatic pine-covered mountains make it a winner for both kids and adults.
It’s also close to Corfu Town, so you can combine a beach morning with a little sightseeing (or an ice cream treat in town).
Mum tip: The sea stays shallow for quite a way out, so children can enjoy a sense of freedom in the water while still being in safe conditions.
Where to stay:
- Domes of Corfu – A beachfront hotel with kids’ clubs, indoor play, and a children’s pool. Rooms are modern and family-friendly.
- Ikos Dassia – A luxury option with eight restaurants, a splash park, and amazing family facilities.
8. Sani Beach, Halkidiki, Greece
If you’re after a touch of luxury with your family beach trip, Sani Beach is ideal. The sand is soft and white, the water is calm, and the whole area is spotless.
Halkidiki is known for its exclusive resorts, and many have private beach sections with shallow, safe swimming areas. It’s a great choice if you want everything — beach, meals, kids’ activities — in one place.
Mum tip: Many hotels here offer babysitting, so parents can sneak in a rare dinner for two while the kids are happily entertained.
Where to stay:
- Sani Dunes – Private beach, luxury family rooms, and kids’ clubs.
- Sani Beach Hotel – Adventure park, pools, and direct beach access. A great balance of family fun and relaxation.
9. Elounda Beach, Crete, Greece
Crete is the largest of the Greek islands, and Elounda Beach is one of its gems. It’s small but beautifully calm, with shallow water and soft golden sand.
Parents will love the peaceful atmosphere — Elounda is more low-key than busier Crete resorts. The views of Spinalonga Island add a bit of history and culture too.
Mum tip: Bring water shoes, the sand is soft, but some patches near the shore can be pebbly, which isn’t fun for little feet.
Where to stay:
- Domes of Elounda – Luxury suites, kids’ clubs, and a crèche for under 4s (rare in Greece).
- Elounda Beach Hotel & Villas – A mix of hotel rooms and villas, some with private pools — perfect for nap time while you still relax outdoors.
10. Blue Lagoon, Olu Deniz, Turkey
Last but definitely not least, the famous Blue Lagoon. It’s one of the most photographed beaches in the world, but it’s also brilliant for families thanks to the warm, shallow water.
The lagoon is calm, making it a safe paddling spot, and the scenery is breathtaking. September and October are particularly good months for families — still hot, but not too much for little ones.
Mum tip: Bring an inflatable ring or boat for the kids — the lagoon is perfect for gentle floating and a fun change from just splashing in the shallows.
Where to stay:
- Orka Sunlife Resort – Includes unlimited entry to Orka World Waterpark, plus family-friendly pools and all-inclusive dining.
- Montebello Resort – A budget-friendly choice with a children’s pool and buffet designed for families.
The Best Beach Holidays in Europe for Families – Final Thoughts
Travelling with kids doesn’t have to be stressful, the right beach can make all the difference. Whether it’s the shallow waters of Majorca, the calm bays of Malta, or the dramatic beauty of Turkey’s Blue Lagoon, these beaches all tick the boxes for a safe, fun, and memorable family holiday.
From splash parks to sandy toes, these destinations prove that Europe is packed with family-friendly beaches. So pack the buckets and spades, don’t forget the snacks, and get ready for some unforgettable family adventures!

Ksamil is a town on the Albanian Riviera and has had some very mixed reviews over the years, and I think a lot of that comes down to when you visit.
We absolutely loved our trip. It was incredibly affordable too - we paid £190 for six nights in an apartment that slept five! (This was in 2023) I’ve written a full blog post about the trip over on the website, where I’ve shared some great-value accommodation options and tips if you’re thinking about booking something similar.
Comment BLOG and I’ll send you the link along with some cheap flights and info on how to get there!
Expect things like:
🍻 £1.50 pints
🦐 Seafood dishes for under £10
☀️ Beautiful, crystal-clear beaches
We visited in May, when there were very few other people around. The town was just starting to open up for the season, the weather was lovely, and it felt relaxed and easy to enjoy.
June also seems like a great time to visit – a few more things open, but still without the peak summer crowds.
July and August appear to be a very different experience. The town is quite small, and it struggles to cope with the number of visitors in peak season. It can feel very crowded, and prices - particularly for things like sun loungers - can become very steep because of the demand.
So if Ksamil is on your list, timing really is everything!
