Things to do in Nottingham

Planning a day out in Nottingham? Whether you’re visiting for the first time, or maybe you’ve been before but are looking for something new, we’ve put together a list that will appeal to all ages and interests. As a local mum myself, you can rest assured that we’ve only picked the very best of what the city has to offer! So if you’re here just for the day or maybe staying a little longer, here’s five family activities you won’t want to miss!

1. Visit Nottingham Castle

No visit to Nottingham is complete without discovering Nottingham’s rebel history at the Castle. What was once a medieval stronghold of the midlands, it is now a family friendly museum and gallery space. With some amazing exhibitions and family friendly activities all year round, learn the history of Robin Hood and also see local modern and historical art. There is also a great play area for older children and lovely views of the city.
Entry is £15 per adult which includes an annual pass. Up to 3 children can enter free with each paying adult.

2. Visit Stonebridge City Farm

Nottingham has a lovely free urban farm just 20 minutes walk out of the city. You can see loads of farm favourites here including goats, pigs and sheep. You can also hand feed them most of them for a small charge of a bag of pellets! They have a lovely big playground, and an affordable café run by volunteers. They also put on activities for kids including music classes and organise special events in the school holidays.
Entry is free with a £3 suggested donation.

3. Visit Nottingham contemporary

This contemporary art space is one of the largest in the UK and houses amazing local, national and international artists and exhibitions year round. It is completely free to enter and they actively encourage families to engage with the art through activity packs and worksheets. During the school holidays, free sensory workshops take place in their large downstairs space. There is also a lovely family friendly café on site.
Free Entry.

4. Visit Nottingham caves

Did you know that Nottingham is home to a massive underground network of caves? Some are open to the public and ready for you to explore. If you are visiting Nottingham with older children, this is a must. It’s a fantastic trip out and definitely something a little bit different. Don’t forget to dress warmly!
Entrance fee: Adult  £8.75, Age 5 -17 £7.65, Under 5s Free

5. Visit Nottingham’s Green Heart and Nottingham Central Library

The south end of the city is going through a period of regeneration at the moment. In this area, you will find a fantastic new multi million pound library with an amazing children’s section, sensory room and lots of activities running through the week. Just outside there is a small play area, the only free playground in the city, and a beautiful new green space to relax.

We absolutely love the Algarve in Portugal, not only because my husband is from there, but it is a fantastic spot for a family holiday 😍

Comment ALGARVE and I’ll send you a list of fab family hotels there plus some recommendations for what to do while there (including my favourite family restaurant!)

The last time I posted about this, there were so many comments from people saying you shouldn`t drink around children. Which I find mad as a child of the 90`s who grew up in working class England when pub culture was at its peak.

Kids entertaining themselves, a glass of wine with friends... If someone wants to open a soft play bar, I`ll be your first customer 🫡

Menorca is a fab shout for a family holiday 🍹

Short transfers ✔️
Calm, shallow beaches ✔️
No chaos, just a relaxed vibe ✔️

It’s one of the easiest places we’ve travelled with kids. Safe, simple, and really stress free. Think beach days, ice creams, and slow evenings without the hectic scenes you can often get on Mallorca and Ibiza. We decided we wanted to live there on the first day of our holiday 😝

We went in August which was a little too hot for us and very busy on some of the most popular beaches. The next time we go we will try May/June or September/October.

Comment MENORCA and I’ll send you a link to our favourite Menorca hotels with splash parks plus a video I made about a cheap boat trip we did 💛

We visited Billund having no idea what to expect, all we knew was that it is the birthplace of LEGO (which was enough in itself to make us want to visit!) We visited LEGOLAND, LEGO House, Lalandia and Wow Park. It’s a very walkable city and really great for families.

Annoyingly Ryanair dropped a lot of routes there, so you can only fly directly from London and Edinburgh. A great alternative is flying to Copenhagen and getting the train. Some people even drive there!

If you go to our blog and search Billund, we have a couple of posts on there about the attractions we visited.
