Shrek’s Adventure
We recently visited London for the day with our 5 year old son Leo and 9 month old baby Luca. Leo (and me) are big Shrek fans, so Shrek’s Adventure has been on our to do list for a while.
We found that there was surprisingly little information available online about what to expect. Since filming or taking photos is not allowed during the adventure, social media offers almost no glimpse into the experience. Something that is quite unusual this day and age! We went in completely oblivious as to what was going to happen.
Shrek’s Adventure
Shrek’s Adventure is an immersive and interactive walk through experience with live actors taking you into a fairy tale world. Our son absolutely loved it, despite it being a little scary in places. As adults we still aren’t sure what to think about it! It really is a bizarre and unique experience. We visited on a Thursday during term time, so it was relatively quiet with minimal queueing.
Where is Shrek’s Adventure?
It is located in London on the south bank of the River Thames. It is right by the London eye. We also visited SEALIFE London which is right next door.
How to get to Shrek’s Adventure?
You can see on the map that the nearest tube stations are Westminster and Waterloo, both are just a 5 minute walk to Shrek’s Adventure. There is step free access leaving via Westminster (the station we travelled to via the circle line from Kings Cross). You also get a lovely view of Big Ben as you exit here.
How long does Shrek’s Adventure take?
The experience from it starting in the 4D bus ride to exiting via the Shrek photo opportunity is around an hour. You will spend some time queueing initially and there are some activities on the way out that you may wish to enjoy.
Is there a cafe in Shrek’s Adventure?
No there isn’t. There is an area to buy sweets and crisps before you enter the tour. I would recommend eating and drinking before you go in to prevent any grumbly tummies!
What do you do at Shrek’s Adventure?
The question we had right up to entering the attraction! In a nutshell, it is a walk through experience where you meet a variety of live actors playing various fairy tale characters. You get to interact with the characters and collect clues as you make your way through the adventure.
The experience starts when you enter a magical lift and go up to an area with toilets and a place to leave your pram if you have one. Make sure everyone uses the toilet here as there wont be another opportunity until the end of the tour. You aren’t allowed to take prams into the attraction, and can’t leave bags in the pram park, so do note that you may end up carrying a baby and a bag! You queue to have your photo taken with a green screen (which you can buy at the end if you wish) and then you start the tour.
A 4D flying bus ride with Donkey takes you to far far away. Along the way we see a variety of characters from dreamworks including Kung Fu Panda and characters from How to train your dragon. We take out one of Rumpelstiltskin’s witches during the flight which leads to him wanting to ‘get us’ throughout the adventure. He eventually captures the group in a cell, but we are saved by Shrek who offers a photo op to end the tour.
Along the adventure we meet Cinderella, sleeping beauty, the muffin man and others as we move between fairy tale themed rooms.
What age group is it for?
All age groups are welcome however I think it is a little scary for those 5 and under. Leo is nearly 6 and really liked it, but there were younger kids in the group who were finding the concept of being chased by bad guys a little scary. There are also a few jump scares, loud noises, flashing lights etc which may be an issue for neurodiverse children. Leo is quite sensitive to loud noises and had to keep holding his ears.
I think children over 12 may find it a bit silly, but our group had adults visiting without children and they seemed to enjoy the experience. The whole experience is very “Panto”, if you enjoy a panto I am sure you will love this!
Tips for visiting Shrek’s Adventure
- Make sure everyone has a wee before you start!
- Take some snacks to eat in the queue, it can be busy at peak times.
- Bring a baby carrier if needed, as you can’t take your pram around the attraction.
- Be aware that there are some loud noises and flashing lights which could startle some children.
- Be aware that there aren’t many places to sit down as you go around the attraction.
Our overall Shrek’s Adventure Review
Shrek’s Adventure is definitely a unique attraction, and something that can be enjoyed by a wide variety of ages. Leo is still talking about it days later, he says he enjoyed it more than SEALIFE London (he LOVES an aquarium, so this is saying something!). The actors and actresses were brilliant, they put so much effort into their performances and the attention to detail in each of the sets is great. Just like in the movie, we loved the subtle jokes for adults that were cleverly sprinkled throughout.
If you are visiting London and looking for something to do with the kids, this is a great shout. Be prepared for something a little different and an experience you won’t forget anytime soon!
