LEGOLAND Resort Billund
Is it worth visiting LEGOLAND Billund?
If you’re a family who loves Lego as much as we do, then a trip to LEGOLAND Billund in Denmark should be on your bucket list! Nestled in the town where this iconic toy was invented, LEGOLAND Billund is the original Lego park and a trip here makes the perfect short break for families and LEGO lovers. Whether you’re planning a summer getaway or a cheeky weekend adventure, this guide will have you covered with everything you need to make your trip smooth, fun, and memorable.

How to get to LEGOLAND Resort Billund from the UK?
Flights to Billund from the UK
Getting to Billund used to be very cheap and easy, especially for those traveling from the UK. Direct flights with Ryanair from major cities like London and Manchester took less than two hours, making it a perfect spot for a family weekend trip. Unfortunately Ryanair wont be flying there anymore.
The reason for this is noted on the Ryanair website:
“Ryanair, today (Fri, 31 Jan) announced that it will close its 2 aircraft Billund base (a loss of $200m investment) and cut all routes to/from Aalborg from the end of March, in response to the Govt’s short-sighted decision to introduce an aviation tax of up to DKK 50 per departing passenger from Jan 2025, coupled with Billund’s failure to agree a competitive long-term agreement.”
A Ryanair spokesperson said:
“We are very disappointed to announce the closure of our 2 aircraft Billund base and our operations at Aalborg from the end of March, but we have been left with no other choice following the Danish Govt’s short-sighted decision to introduce a harmful aviation tax from Jan 2025.
Ryanair is the only major airline growing in Europe, and cost is the main factor when deciding where to allocate aircraft and growth. Unfortunately, this harmful aviation tax makes Denmark (especially regional Denmark) hopelessly uncompetitive compared to other EU countries, like Sweden, Hungary, and Italian regions, who are abolishing aviation taxes to stimulate traffic recovery and growth”
Alternative ways to access Billund
You can still fly between London and Billund with airlines like British Airways. Naturally this will be more expensive than you would have previously paid with Ryanair.
You could consider getting budget flights to Copenhagen and then a 3 hour train to Billund. Copenhagen is a fantastic destination for families, you can read more about it here.
Arriving at Billund Airport
Once you arrive at Billund Airport, you’re practically on LEGOLAND’s doorstep. It’s only around a 10-minute drive from the airport to the park.
There is a family lane at passport control which nobody was using. I always keep an eye out for these so we walked straight to the front of an otherwise lengthy queue.
We arrived late, and with little patience left, so we got straight in a taxi to Lego Hotel for around £18. You can grab a taxi, hop on a bus, or rent a car if you’re planning to explore a bit more of Denmark during your stay.

Hotels in Billund
One of the best parts about visiting LEGOLAND in Billund is that you don’t have to go far to find great value accommodation close to the park. Several hotels are conveniently located within walking distance, making your stay stress-free. Plus, many of Billund’s other family-friendly attractions are clustered nearby, making it easy to explore everything without spending too much on travel.
LEGOLAND Hotel Billund
If you’re wanting to go all-in on the LEGO experience, this is the place to be. Hotel LEGOLAND is located right next to the park, with a connecting passageway meaning you don’t need to queue at the entrance to get in. It’s packed with fun, themed rooms, from pirate adventures to LEGO friends. Naturally there is LEGO everywhere and lots of activities to keep the kids entertained. There’s also early park access for hotel guests in the peak months and free breakfast. It works out much cheaper than the Lego Hotel in Windsor, so make sure you compare both before deciding which to visit.
LEGOLAND Castle Hotel
Want to sleep like royalty? This hotel is designed to resemble a grand castle and offers themed rooms. Whether knights, wizards or princesses are your thing, there’s lots of magic with a touch of LEGO charm. This hotel has a restaurant, playground and play room. Perfect for families who want a bit of extra enchantment. Located right across the road from the park.
LEGOLAND Holiday Village
LEGOLAND Holiday Village is a great option for families looking for a lower budget stay whilst still extending their LEGO adventure beyond the park. Located just a short walk from LEGOLAND, this charming village offers a range of themed accommodation, including Ninjago cabins, Wild West Cabins, and camping spots. It’s perfect for families who want a fun, relaxed atmosphere with plenty of outdoor play areas.
Lalandia Holiday Resort
Located just a short walk from LEGOLAND, Lalandia is a full on indoor holiday centre. It has a huge indoor water park (the biggest in Scandinavia, bowling, mini-golf, and even ice skating. If you’re staying for a few days, it’s a fantastic option for keeping everyone entertained when you’re not in the park. We visited for the day which I would recommend. I will write a separate blog post on this place soon.
Billund City Hotels
If you’d rather stay somewhere a little quieter or if you are on a tighter budget, Billund itself has a range of small hotels and holiday apartments. These are ideal if you’re looking to combine your trip to LEGOLAND with exploring other parts of Denmark. Billund is a small, quaint town, so no matter where you stay, you won’t be too far from the park. Use our DIY Trip Builder to have us recommend some hotels to you. Our Billund page has new deals added every week.
A Brief History of LEGOLAND Billund
LEGOLAND Billund opened its doors in 1968, right next to the original Lego factory where the famous bricks were first made. This makes it the original and oldest LEGOLAND park in the world. It was created as a place to showcase Lego creations and entertain visitors, and it quickly became one of Denmark’s top tourist attractions.
Billund LEGOLAND Tickets
Ticket prices for LEGOLAND Billund vary depending on the season and whether you buy them in advance. For the best price you should book your tickets online ahead of time. Prices usually start around £34 per person, with free entry for kids under three. You can get a two day pass from around £53 which I would recommend, as one day really isn’t enough to do everything.
Arriving at LEGOLAND Resort Billund
If you are driving to the park just for the day there is parking available for around £8. You can book this online.
Assuming most of you will be staying on site or at a nearby hotel, chances are you will be walking to the park. Queues start to form outside the entrance around 20 minutes before opening. Don’t worry about taking pictures with the sign whilst the place is crowded, we went back later in the day when the plaza was empty.
If you are staying at Hotel Legoland as we did, remember you have a special entrance to get you in there quickly and easily. In the peak season there is early park access for hotel guests.
Practical Tips for Tackling the Day
Having a bit of a plan can make a huge difference, especially when traveling with children. Here are a few tips to help you make the most of your visit:
Book Tickets in Advance
LEGOLAND Billund can get busy, particularly in the summer and during school holidays. Buying your tickets online before you go not only makes sure you get in but also gets you the best price.
Check the Height Requirements
Like many theme parks, LEGOLAND has height requirements for some of its rides. Make sure to check these ahead of time to avoid any disappointment. Theres nothing worse than really building up a ride to get there and realise one of your children is too small. Some height requirements are slightly different to Windsor, so do check even if you are a LEGOLAND regular in the UK.
Pack for All Weather
Denmark’s weather can be a bit unpredictable just like the UK. Bring layers, a waterproof jacket, and sunscreen, no matter what time of year you visit.
Bring Snacks and Water
While there are plenty of food options inside the park, you can save some money by taking your own packed lunch. Even having a few snacks on hand can be a lifesaver when the little ones get hungry in the middle of a queue. There are water fountains throughout the park where you can refill your bottles, helping you save a bit of money too.
Download the LEGOLAND App
The park has an official app that includes a map with ride wait times. Although not all the rides in the Billund LEGOLAND have live wait times, many of the more popular ones do. This is really useful when deciding where to go next.
LEGOLAND Billund Rides
LEGOLAND Billund is divided into 10 themed areas, each with its own set of rides, attractions, and play areas. The current areas can be viewed on the map above. I will list some of the highlights and Leo’s favourite rides. This is in no way a list of everything you can do at LEGOLAND Billund.
Thrill Rides
Below are some of the more thrilling rides along with their height requirements.
Apocalypseburg Sky Battle
Minimum height 130cm.
One for the dads. I say this as along with my Husband, it seemed everyone in the queue was a dad! You get your own plane and decide whether you have a nice gentle flight, or spin like crazy!

Polar X-Plorer
Minimum height 120cm
A steel rollercoaster with a 5m free fall drop.

X-treme Racers
Minimum height 120cm
A high rollercoaster style ride with lots of twists and turns.

Flying Eagle
Minimum height 100cm
A small rollercoaster great for children who aren’t quite 120cm.

The Dragon
Minimum height 100cm
Another smaller rollercoaster loved by our son. It’s pretty much the same as the one at Windsor. You start by going through the Lego Castle and then fly out into the roller coaster section.

Favourites of our 5 year old
Below are rides that our 110cm 5 year old son loved (He’s actually more 107cm but with his trainers he managed to make the cut). He loves The Dragon but thought the Flying Eagle was a bit boring. His words lol.
Emmets Flying Adventure
Minimum height 100cm
This is the same style ride as “Flight of the Sky Lion” but with a different themed movie. One of Leo’s favourites at Billund and Windsor.

Lloyds Laser Maze
No minimum height
This is less of a maze and more of a tunnel with lots of lasers you have to avoid. I cannot tell you the number of times we did this. There is a competitive element as it times you, and marks you down if you touch a laser. You can choose easy, medium or hard making it fun for all ages.

The Haunted House
Minimum height 110cm
I was a bit confused about the height limit on this one, but at the end there is a ride. It essentially takes you really high and drops you a couple of times. Leo really enjoyed the mirror maze in there and loves a ride that drops you.

Unikitty’s Disco Drop
Minimum height 100cm
This is the same ride as the Fire and Ice drop at Windsor, but themed differently. As I mentioned above, Leo loves a vertical drop ride. There were no queues while we were there on a Monday so he stayed on for three rounds (at which point we insisted he leave!)

Caterpillar
Minimum height 90cm
I was surprised how fast this one goes! It’s aimed at smaller children but I definitely wouldn’t go on it a second time! Leo loves anything that spins fast, me, not so much!

Rides we took our baby on
We didn’t want to bring our 4 month old baby all the way to LEGOLAND without taking him on a few rides! There is something here for everyone, even if your toddler is under 90cm, there’ll be something that they will love. Again this isn’t a list of everything, just the ones we enjoyed.
LEGO Safari
A small truck that you sit in and get taken around a track to see animals made of Lego. He didn’t have a clue what was going on but didn’t dislike it. Our 5 year old had more fun ‘taking his brother’ on his first rides.

LEGONDOL
A mini ferris wheel. He actually seemed to enjoy this one crammed in the tiny space with me and his brother.

Monorail
Another winner. We definitely got a smile or two before a nappy explosion ruined the vibes.

Mini Boats
He seemed pretty excited to be in a boat. You sail around different parts of the world which are made from Lego. My husband got in a boat with our baby and 5 year old. They all seemed to have fun.

Other Things to do at LEGOLAND Billund
There is so much more to do aside from the rides. There are lots of playgrounds (including a Peppa Pig themed one!) and many opportunities to build. The building was Leo’s absolute favourite part. We must have spent an hour in the Ferrari Car building section! On top of that there is a whole Aquarium which Leo and Luca both enjoyed.

Overall
A trip to LEGOLAND resort Billund needs to be more than just a day out. There is so much to do you will need at least two days to feel like you’ve covered it. As well as LEGOLAND, Billund has many other family attractions. Our favourite was Lego House which you can read about here.

It’s so much more than just LEGOLAND!
Billund in Denmark is the perfect destination for a family short break. The LEGO hotel is cheaper than the one in Windsor and honestly, the park is SO much better.
We spent two days in LEGOLAND which was just enough, however you CAN NOT miss Lego House, WOW park and a trip to lalandia.

Is this the coolest restaurant?!
For our Lego loving son it absolutely is!
Located in Lego House in Billund Denmark, this restaurant is definitely unique. You can eat here without paying for admission to Lego House, but you should definitely check it out if you have time, our son enjoyed Lego House more than Legoland!
Two adult meals, a kids meal, 3 beers and a coke was £85 - pricey, but a really unique experience!

Have you been to both parks?! Which did you prefer? PR visit
Both of these Legoland parks are brilliant but we REALLY enjoyed Billund. The queues were much better, prices at the park were cheaper and the park just felt more well structured. I’ll be posting lots more about it this week.
We stayed at the Lego hotel and visited Lalandia, Lego house and Wow park during the trip. Highly recommend for a family short break!

The Algarve has arguably one of the most beautiful coastlines in Europe. If it’s dramatic cliffs, blue sea and year round sun weren’t enough, the Algarve has amazing seafood, great wines and lots of quaint little towns to explore.

Day 1 of our 17 night trip to the Algarve and Porto 🇵🇹✈️
We visit the Algarve often as João is from here - the poor lad unfortunately left this sunny paradise for Nottinghamshire to be with me ✨ We are looking to move back here as soon as we can escape our mortgage..
Anyway, Alvor is honestly such a perfect place for a holiday. If you’re considering the Algarve look into Alvor or Portimão. I’ll do more videos on here later in the trip. The weather stays great into September and October, so it is the perfect place for a post summer escape. ☀️
